type 2 sick with cold - continue taking diabetes meds?

I am a type two diabetic. My morning blood levels are running high.234 this am. I am fighting a chest cold. Should I be taking a glipizude along with my Metformin am and pm til this is gone? A morning walk generally drops my bs a lot but haven't felt like walking.

Good morning jujubee. I'm sorry you're feeling sick. This question about whether or not to take your diabetes meds while you're sick should be answered by your doctor, so please call his/her office.

In fact, if you're very sick, maybe you need to see the doctor to make sure you don't have the flu or a bacterial infection.

While you're sick, remember that blood sugar often goes high as your body is fighting the illness, so don't eat lots of carbs which will make your blood sugar rise even higher. Make sure you're hydrated. Broth and chicken soup are good old stand-bys that help.

In the meantime, please call your doctor. Personally, I would not stop taking my diabetes medication if I'm sick but you do need to talk to your doctor or the nurse in the office.

I am still taking my Metformin am and pm. I generally add glipizide if it goes high. After a miles and a half walk it dropped to from 234 (fasting) to 176. I added a 5 mg glipizide with my morning 1000 Metformin. Will recheck my blood in an hour to see how it's doing. I have an spot with my asthmas dr for this Thursday for my upper respiratory thing. Hate for my sugars to go ape! I've got the chicken soup cooking and have been really thirsty so extra water not a problem! Thank you!!!!

Hi again. I hope you're feeling better. How was the visit to the asthma doctor?

Even with being sick, you need to get your blood sugar down to more normal levels. It's great that you're walking because that helps a lot with blood sugar (as well as other health issues). Since you're being active, the next way to help bring blood sugar down to normal levels is food. Staying away from heavy carbs will help you do that.

Are you on asthma medication, too?

Yes I take advair am and pm and have had asthma since age 5!
It's very controlled until I get an upper respiratory infection, my appt is not until Thursday, the day after tomorrow, will let you know what they say then.
