Welcome to the Diabetes Forum, Angeleyes13 and bless you for being so alert
and concerned! I hope your future DIL does NOT return to that doctor! Her blood sugar is critically high and living with that high blood sugar can cause so many health problems!
First, if she is very very thin, having lost a lot of weight within recent months, then she needs immediate care now, further tests to see if she is type 1 and if she is, she needs insulin therapy.
If she is overweight or just heavy and especially if she has members of her family (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings) who have diabetes, then most likely she is type 2. Type 2s may be able to lower blood sugar by changing food plans and getting more active. Monitoring blood sugar every day is important. In short, all carbohydrates raise blood sugar. Any food made with flour which means bread, pasta,
cookies, crackers, etc. whether or not they have sugar. Any food made with sugar, honey, maple syrup, high fructose corn syrup, agave, etc. will raise blood sugar. Potatoes, rice and corn will raise blood sugar.
So, basically meat/chicken/fish with other vegetables, salads, nuts, some dairy (cheese) are great.
Here is a website that has everything about
blood sugar:
www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/It makes me so mad when I hear stories of doctors who are so ignorant! Her blood sugar should be in the low 100's. I am amazed that her A1c is only 6.5 which is an average of about
140, something odd to me if her other readings are in the 300s.
So, again, if she has recently lost a lot of weight and is becoming very thin, she needs medical attention now as she might be becoming a type 1.
If she is on the heavy side, she needs to start eating differently as I described above and then see the PA or a different doctor whenever she can get an appointment.
In the meantime, she should keep a journal of what she's eating with the time and her blood sugar reading just before she eats and about
2 hours later and when she gets up in the morning. Her blood sugar will respond to the food she eats, no matter which type she is.
Please keep us updated. You are very correct in that she needs better medical care!
