Hi Tom. Welcome to the Diabetes Forum. Is the 6.2 the A1c reading? This is the blood sugar average over about
90 days. It's elevated but not critical.
In order to bring it down, you can lose weight and have a regular routine of sustained exercise (like walking, biking, swimming, running, etc.) and an eating plan in which you cut down on heavy carbs like bread, potatoes, rice, corn, pasta. Any food made with flour and/or sugar will raise blood sugar.
So, yes, you can control your blood sugar if you follow the above recommendations. If you have family members with diabetes, it may be genetic but it's not impossible to avoid as long as you take care of yourself with diet and exercise.
