Hi and welcome over here at the Diabetes Forum! I'm not sure about
the sleep issues, if they are related to the diabetes or not.
Do you know what her blood sugar readings are? Does she test when she wakes up in the morning (fasting) and after meals, etc.? Is she on any medications for diabetes? Or, is she on any other medications for that matter as they can also affect sleep. Can you tell me what her doctor has told her? And, what does she normally eat for different meals?
First, I'm going to give you a link to a website that's nicknamed BloodSugar 101. It has lots of information about
blood sugar, studies, food and so on. There is a search box too which can help.
www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/.
Second, are there other members of her family (parents, siblings, aunts, uncles) who have diabetes?
In a nutshell, if a person (diabetic or not) eats a lot of heavy carbs during a meal (think of Thanksgiving with potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, desserts, etc.), that person is likely to feel drowsy an hour or two after eating and need to take a nap. This, of course, would put the night time sleep routine out of sync. I don't know if this is the case which is why I'd like to know what she eats for breakfast, lunch, dinner...
Finally, she
will be able to get her blood sugar in order by eating food that is not going to raise her blood sugar too much if she cuts out (or at the very least) cuts way back on potatoes, rice, bread, any food made with flour and sugar.
In the meantime, looking to hear back from you! And please encourage her to become a member and post here!
Thank you for posting!
