Good morning, Dolphin! First, I want you to understand that with diabetes and taking
any kind of
meds, you should keep your eating plan (diet) consistent and not change it a lot. Of course, there are times that I'll eat something I don't normally eat or that I know I shouldn't but I will eat a small amount and that will be an exception to my eating plan. Keeping your eating plan consistent will help keep your blood sugar consistent.
Now, having said that, if a diabetic consistently eats bread and potatoes in his or her eating plan, then the blood sugar will be consistently high and so will need medications to bring it down. However, if that diabetic reduces the amount of carbs or eats a very low carb diet, then there will be a reduced need for medication. If the person is type 1, the amount of insulin could be reduced. If the person is type 2, then whatever medication is taken can be reduced or even eliminated - depending on what the blood sugar readings are.
If you have neuropathy in your feet (you wrote that your feet are painful), then keeping your blood sugar as close to normal is really important. At the same time, exercise is also important, so please look into an exercise bike or swimming. Neither of these should cause your feet to be as painful as walking - but it's very important to keep your circulation moving and your muscles working. I know there is medication for neuropathy but you need to speak to your doctor about
that.
Please read the link in my signature to learn more about
blood sugar and food. Also, the book
Diabetes Solution
by Richard Bernstein, MD is valuable as it explains how diabetes affects us, blood sugar, medications, exercise and food.
Can you write about
what you eat for meals every day? I'm glad you're active again in our forum!

Unless sugars stabilise you are putting yourself at risk. Diabetes is known as the creeper. Usually when it reveals ir ugly head some things have become prominent....feet...big warning. Heed it.
I am the poster child...did my teeth...attacked my heart...and peripheries. Last mri showed no probs with blood brain barrier...but due to savage memory degradation it needed it again. I have retinapathy and one blown eye.
Double by pass...2 yrs of laser in eyes...intra occular injections and after many bleeds a vitrectomy. My drivers license i cut up. This because i shirked diabetes. It has attacked my kidneys as well. I have a permant endocrinologist...a grumpy professor. Listen to ya Dr's...pls. HT

We can only do the best that we can for ourselves but the key is knowing 'what is the best'! This is where being informed and enlightened is so important!
