Over the last few years I’ve been experiencing peripheral neuropathy in my feet which has gotten worse recently. I am now reluctant to drive as I have trouble sensing where I place my right foot and the amount of pressure to use.

I have been diabetic for the last 30 years and finally went on insulin about 2 years ago. Though my blood glucose is within normal range the neuropathy still continues, and is worsening - especially in my right foot and ankle. Does this indicate my driving days are over? 😟

Hi and welcome to the Diabetes Forum. I don't know the answer to your question. Are you seeing an endo? If it's neuropathy due to diabetes, it would be from high blood sugar over a long time (years) even if the blood sugar is withing the acceptable limits listed by the ADA. And whether or not a person is affected really depends. Some people don't get neuropathy and some people do.

I would suggest asking your doctor/endo about this because as you describe, it could be dangerous to drive with limited feeling in your feet.

I recommend reading the link in my signature about blood sugar. By keeping blood sugar really controlled to what a non-diabetic's is, you might be able to stop the progression of neuropathy.

Sounds like diabetic nuropathy for sure. Me have it, as a complication. One of!
Nerve conduction test is best. Endo, as lanie says, spot on.
Yes, complications get pronounced with lifelong diabetes, even a small spike for
me and i am in pain.

Hi Nancy, so good to see you back at Healing Well, but so sorry to read about the neuropathy. My husband is diabetic too & has it in both hands & feet. He is on a hefty dose of Gabapentin which helps. I think you need to be worked up & take it from there. There are medications that can help. Also, be sure to have your B12 checked.

I think the last time you posted in the CP forum you were getting ready to have surgery. I hope that surgery went well.

Mine are so bad, I have others drive for ne if it is over 10 miles.I have it in my legs by locking up and seems I can't move. I use my cane most of time especially in cold months.I am on Gabapentin and Metformin.I have to use a pen to check my sugar from time to time.It is hard to funtion because my memory is not good after chemo and it is hard to remember how to use the pen-even when I recorded them showing me how to use it.Next appointment I am going to look into getting an easier one.

Welcome to the Diabetes Forum, Nikki. I hope you are doing well. Yes, if you are having trouble with a certain pen for testing your blood sugar, talk to your doctor and see about getting a different kind. If you live with another person, maybe you can also teach that person how to test your blood sugar.
