I just read that on average, people who check their blood sugar at home have 4 glucose meters! I just purchased my third, because my Contour is so inconsistent and varied so wildly within minutes that I feel I can't trust it (even when calibrated); my Oh'care Lite was (I think) about 20 too high. And I'm hoping maybe an average of readings will give me a better idea.

I used to have four but they were old Contours so I got rid of them when I got my new AccuChek. As far as accuracy and different readings, there are industry standards because these are regulated instruments that measure blood sugar. These standards allow for about 10% more or less difference in readings so that's why you'll find your meters differ. Being home devices that use just a bead of blood from the finger they are not as accurate as the results from your doctor's office when your blood is drawn from a vein.

My insurance only let's me have one, even though I'd kill for another to carry in my purse and put in my room at night.

Hi Wendy. My insurance only pays for one meter also. If you want to buy an inexpensive one, you can buy Walmart's brand ReliOn. It has different models now but they might use the same strips as each other. It's a good choice if you're looking for a meter you have to pay out of pocket for. Do some checking online.

Also, if you inquire at a meter's website, they may send you a free meter and about 10 strips but after that you'll have to buy the strips yourself.
