Byetta-Spikes and companion meds question

:-) I have to tell y'all I love the lizard. I feel so much better and I have lost 8 1/2 pounds in four weeks. I do have a few problems with nausea but it passes and having carried two babies it is akin to morning sickness and I can cope with it.
My problem is that my numbers are flip flopping, they were averaging around 150 in the am and 125 pm- pre-med numbers and now they are spiking up to the 200's. I take glyburide with my shot. I was taking 2000 mil of glucophage a day, with actos and glyburide. I feel so much better. I wonder if some of you Byetta pros could tell me: do you think I should change my "companion" medication or go to the 10 pen? I hate Glucophage, I was hoping to be off of it.



The shots are helping me lose weight and generally feel so much better after nearly ten years on glucophage -with the stomach-achey side effects. I recommend it- I am just a little worried about the actual control on my bs levels. Any suggestions? Thanks- Teresa

Hi Teresa,

First off, if you go to the 10mcg pen its going to drop all your overall numbers. 150 and 125 are still to high.  Now, that being said, Byetta was made to work in conjunction with glucophage(metformin).  This class of meds increases your sensitivity to insulin while the glyburide, a sulfonylurea tells your body to make more insulin.  The glyburide could probably be curtailed somewhat with a 10mcg pen but you need metformin or a similar oral to help break down your insulin resistance.  There are other drugs besides metformin and your Endocrinologist can suggest an alternative.  Since Byetta works to increase your insulin flow to accomodate a blood sugar increase and then shuts this action down when your return to normal, it is important that you have some med that accomdates this increase of insulin by working to tear down your insulin resistance.

So, move to the 10mcg pen and talk to your doc about your companion meds and what they should be. I think you can probably make some successful adjustments there!

I can't tell y'all how glad I am that I found healingwell. It is a blessing to me. It gives me peace of mind to know that y'all are out there. Thank you for the information. I do't have a endocrinologists the closest one is about 200 miles away. I have a G.P. and he is also new to Byetta....I was the first to ask for Byetta. So I am learning as I go. I didn't like the metformin but if Byetta works better with it I will try it again. I want my numbers down. Thanks again.

I echo your thoughts about HW and especially Warren! I would like to nominate him for Mod of the Year (if we had such a contest) for his helpful and vast knowlege of diabetes and especially Byetta! Maybe we should all send Peter, the site owner, an email suggesting Warren for Mod of the Year... You think?

Hi everyone.
I am a new user of Byetta 5 mcg. My first shot was last night. I woke up at 1:30 AM with a mouth full of hot, acidy water. I just kept swollowing and put a lemon drop in my mouth. This mornings shot went without any problems. Tonight, I am taking some Tums. Do you think that this will help?

I have been on 5mg once a day. Feel fine never got sick. I have been on it for 2 weeks. Lost 7 pounds but the morning readings are from 170 to 180. Might need to get on more than once a day.

Hi Sledgehammer,

With morning readings that high you definately need to be taking your Byetta twice a day!! you need to have your morning numbers at 100 or less.  At least thats what you should shoot for.  Talk to your doc about taking your shots at breakfast and dinner!
