I am type 2 (however Dr says more like 1.5) and am having a flare up of uncerative colitis (was in remission for 12-15 years).  I am unable to control blood sugars.  Medications include:  Asacol (6 twice daily-400mg); Avandia (8mg at night), Glipizide ER (5mg twice daily), and prednizone (30 mg daily).  Any suggestions?

Get your GI to write a script for you to have a one-on-one class with a registered dietician or certified nutritionist. You need someone with expertise in fiber content, carbs and other aspects of your diet... Plus you are juggling the predizone which throws your sugars all out of whack, too.

My daughter has Crohns and when it's driving her nuts she goes on a baby food diet... The low residue seems to give her GI tract a rest. She has also gone on a kind of liquid diet of just a "Boost" type meal replacement. If I were you I'd fight like crazy to get weaned off that prednizone as soon as possible. That stuff is bad news in the long haul. Hard on your diabetes, bad for your bones. In my humble opinion I would talk to the doc about a dose lowering schedule as soon as possible. I'm not a doctor, but my daughter has survived Crohns for over 20 years without corticosteroids. We knew early on not to get on that roller coaster. You may want to try other alternatives. You have a rough time with all that's going on. I'll be sending good thoughts and prayers your way.

Hi Herd One. I have Crohn's and diabetes and I agree with Jeannie about the Prednisone. I won't take it again since I developed Avascular Necrosis of the hip and had to have a complete replacement. I'm sure there are alternatives. I'm on Imuran and Remicade now; I'm not sure whether Remicade is approved for UC, but I'd much rather be on an immunosuppressant than Prednisone. I'd have a good talk with your gastroenterologist, too, mentioning the diabetes.
