I totally agree with Warren. I am not a doctor either, but I was put on Actos (the chemical cousin of Avandia) and metformin when I was diagnosed- my fasting BG was 437 and my A1c was 15! (Heavy duty meds needed!) The Actos made me gain 17# in 17 days- it is associated with congestive heart failure.
Within 1 month, my fasting BG was 127 and my A1c was 7.7- I demanded to be taken off the Actos- Now, 6 months after my Dx - my last A1c was 5.4 and my BG has leveled off in the 80's most of the time. I am down to 1500 mg of Metformin, because I keep dropping the dose on my own, determining the reaction of my body, and then informing my doctor of what I have discovered. It is my goal to eliminate all drugs and then control by diet and exercise for as long as I can. It is not my doctor's plan.
My doctor has tried to get me to take an ACE inhibitor and a Statin because of a large study that was recently done- My BP is already low and my lipid profile is better than 98% of the population thanks to my life long vegetarian lifestyle. I had a dye scan done on my eyes and the time it took for the dye to travel from my arm to my eye was the same as a healthy 15 your old. I thanked her and refused the drugs.
To me the whole thing makes about as much sense as a recent study where pre-diabetics were given Avandia and low and behold -some of them DID not become diabetics! Well DUH- none of them should have become diabetics if Avandia is so good!
Sorry for the rant- but my fear is that soon we may all be given a rasher of prescriptions against all manner of maladies -just in case...
