Low Blood Pressure

My blood pressure reading today was 83! (normal range 120-140).

The nurse taking it asked me if I was OK and did I feel dizzy or faint. When I said no, she was surprized. Surprized that she didn't have to give me oxygen. Should I be concerned?

I must admit I know very little about blood pressure (other than knowing that for Diabetics it's usually on the high side???).

Going to do some researching but would appreciate if anyone has any comments/suggestions/causes/etc.

Hi Kris, there are 2 numbers when they take your blood pressure.  The textbook normal is 120/80.  I'm supposing the nurse meant the 83 was the diastolic (the second number).  That's within normal.  Do you remember what the other number was?  I'm wondering why she asked you if you felt dizzy unless your blood pressure had been much higher before and you weren't used to it being lower (or normal).  In any case, try to find out what the other number was.  The first number (the higher one) is called the systolic.  Good luck.

Mine was very low yesterday as well ... like 90/50. I'm concerned as well.

Good grief, Ruth.  That reading is too low.  What did the doctor say?  With blood pressure that low, aren't you dizzy?

Well, the reading is low but if you're not feeling dizzy or unsteady or "off" (fuzzy thinking, that kind of thing), there's probably nothing to do.  The doctor is the one who should guide you anyway.  So, as long as you don't have those feelings, then you don't do anything.  I take meds for hypertension, the opposite problem.

Hi Guys... Thanks for the replies :-)

Lanie... actually, it was the first number (systolic) that was 83. That's why she was so concerned. It all went so fast that I didn't have a chance to write down the other number (diastolic) but it was low, too.

I've always had normal-low blood pressure but this time it was really low. I see my GP in a couple weeks so, I'm going to ask her to check it again (maybe do the standing/sitting/laying down thing).

Gosh, you guys had me reading up on low blood pressure.  (I wish those readings were my constant blood glucose but that's another matter ....)  Anyway, it seems some people have lower than normal blood pressure.  And I believe the only concern would be to watch for dizziness, fainting, lightheadedness, queaziness, fuzzy thinking - that sort of thing.  High blood pressure leads to a lot of other health problems, so that's one more thing you can scratch off your list of concerns.    :-)

My Blood Pressure is also very low  88/50.  Is it the diabetes causing low b/p?

Anyone can have high or low blood pressure.Mine used to run 90/50 at times when I was working in the 80's/90's.It wasn't til 97 i had very high blood pressure & was put on medication for it.It's good now.At the time I had no underlying health problems.You don't have to have a disease to have high/low BP.

Low blood pressure expecially in the summer may be a sign of dehydration, try to drink more water and see what will happen,most doctors are not concerned about low blood pressure if you dont feel dizzy but if you blood pressure fluctuates then you may have a problem
