Setting up the Byetta pen

I am confused about the pen setup and how you should use it after it is setup.

Now setting up the pen means to turn the knob until it stops, pull out the knob and turn it until you see the number 10?

After you inject, do you just push in the knob and pull it out again when you are ready to use it again or do you go all the way back to the first arrow?

Also, is there a way to know whether the medicine is actually going in when you inject it?

Sorry for all of the questions, I am not seeing great numbers especially in the morning.

You have the pen setup correct. Once you inject count to 10 or so before you remove the needle from your skin, then remove the needle from the pen, and just leave it until the next time. You don't need to do any turning of it until you get ready to use it the next time. Don't pull the knob out until the next time you use it.

When I was on Byetta I often saw a little droplet when I removed the needle and then I knew the medicine was going in. I know that it doesn't seem to move at all, but it does. Someone compared it to the gas gage on a car...seems like it doesn't move forever and then all of a sudden you're out of gas. Did you prime the pen before you used it to make sure liquid was coming out of it? How long have you been on the 10 pen? Some people see results immediately and for others it takes awhile. I only did the 10 for a week because it made me so horribly ill. That week my numbers were actually high. The 5 did nothing for me at all, and I guess it doesn't for most people.

Thanks for the reply.  I didn't prime the pen at first, I just started using it and I turn it everytime. 

I have been violently ill twice since I started on it 2 months ago and I really am not sure what caused those incidents.  I talked to my Dr. about it and I am losing weight so well that I really want it to work.

I also want it to bring my sugar down in the morning too.  What we diabetics will go through...  :-)

You do need to turn it every time. Just not until you get ready to use it . I would prime it once just to make sure you are getting the liquid out of it. Just do it like you were prepping it for an injection only don't put it in the skin. Just hold it up and push to make sure it squirts out. If nothing comes out try it once more. If it still doesn't then you may have a bad pen and need to see the pharmacist. I know that if you do get a bad pen, you can call Amylin-Lilly and they will send you a voucher for a new one. But you do need to prime the pen first just to make sure it is working properly. There is enough medicine in the pen to test it a couple of times and still have the 30 day dosage.

Ok,

After inecting, I leave the knob in place and then when I get ready to inect again, just pull the knob out, put the needle in and press?

I have been injecting, pulling the needle out, turning the knob back to the arrows and starting all over again each time.

The pens are quite fragile, it is hard to turn the thing sometimes.

You got it. Good luck with the thing. If you go to the official byetta site I believe there is actually a video that goes through the whole thing for you. The site is really full of a lot of info. You should check it out.

Thanks, believe it or not, I watched the vid before I started using the pen and that part wasn't covered.

I have a friend on it as well but I never thought to ask that question.  It arose when I went looking for more info concerning use of the pen.

Ok, I watched the tutorial at their website and they say to turn the knob away from you after you are done with your injection.  I was doing it that way originally but it was too hard to turn the knob so I went the other direction.

I guess if I have that problem, it means I have a bad pen.  I am getting another one soon so we will see.
