seizures of a 13 years old boy

Episode One

Physical conditions: TKP caught a severe flu overseas including a high fever and traveled to the U.S even though his doctor opposed the travel. The travel took around 25 hours. He was completely exhausted upon arriving in the U.S

In the U.S. TKP was still sick with a high fever. Around 1 a.m on January 2, 2006, TKP waked up while calling “mom”. Parents were surprised at his call in the mid night and tried to comfort him with messaging his body. They (devoted Christian) prayed to God to dispel a demon for around two minutes. Then, suddenly, the boy stared at a fixed place at the corner between the wall and ceiling while quietly uttered a curse as if he had seen somebody at that location for 10 seconds. Parents continued to pray. TKP told that he loved his parents but he was no longer to tolerate the guy he was watching; he should crush him now. Immediately his tongue was stuck out and his eyes were rolled up. Then he underwent rapid contractions of bodily muscles including clumsiness of his arms and foots while jerking his neck to one direction for one minute.

After the contractions of his bodily muscles stopped, he whined why he should tolerate the torture for 30 seconds. Then, he returned to his normal life; he watched TV and then fell asleep.

Later he recalled somebody above as his game character. During the ordeal above, he continued to have a high fever. He was under medication to control the fever

During the daytime of January 2, 2006, the boy took a rest and appeared to be fine including an improvement in his fever. The boy went to bed around 10 p.m. Around 1 a.m. on January 3, 2006, he waked up and complained of headache. Parents noticed a high fever by touching his body. Immediately he repeated the seizure that was similar to the one in the morning of January 2, 2006

At the end of the seizure, the boy comforted his parents by saying that he was fine. He asserted himself that he could get over the difficulties he was facing. He prayed.

Episode Two

Physical conditions: The boy caught a severe flu with a high fever; he was completely exhausted with his swelled thyroids.

Parents realized their doctor’s office was closed on in the Wednesday afternoon (January 23, 2008). The boy was not under medication and went to bed around 10:30 p.m.  Around the mid night, a father heard a sound from his bed room. The boy frowned with a pain of his headache. His mother took him to the bathroom to wash his face with cool water. His father who followed him into the bathroom saw KTP weeping there. Thus the father who remembered the previous episode was nervous and loudly asked for what his problems were. Upon the high pitch shriek of his father, the boy was surprised and collapsed to the floor. He underwent the seizure for around 20 seconds with symptoms: his tongue sticking out, his eye rolling, rapid contraction of his bodily muscles, clumsiness of his arms and foots and jerking of his neck to one direction for around 20 seconds.

On the scene, his brother told his father that they should call ‘911’. Then, KTP requested not to call ‘911’ and he assured that he could regain control over his body. KTP returned to his normal status. TKP and his family watched TV for one hour. Everybody returned to bed. However, his father could see that TKP tossed around on the bed. He had a high fever without medication.

Around 8 a.m on January 24, 2008, his father and the boy lied on the floor in the living room and noticed that the boy waked up and was staring at a fixed area without saying anything (five seconds). His father was nervous again; he asked TKP with a voice of fear what he was doing while touching his arms. TKP replied to his father that he was very scared by the shriek of his father and asked not to scare him again. He continued to say that he could no longer tolerate the boy who was bullying him. He named one of his close friends who currently live in other country that they met around four years ago. He underwent the seizure as did in the early morning for around 10 seconds. He became normal. During this period, he could not eat anything; no medication was given to control his fever. He had a high fever.

The boy can recall most of what he underwent during the seizures. E.g., he recalls who the person (a game character) is, he responded to his brother’s request to call ‘911’.

Help...

1) Should TKP see a doctor?

2) What are possible consequences if appropriate treatments are not given to this boy?

2) Any information resources about seizures of a 13 years old boy?

Regarding your inquiries,

1: Yes, it occurred with fever. He has not experienced any seizure without high fever.
2: No, they do not know the cause (except for the fever). They have not seen a specialist except for their family doctor who has told that a seizure with fever should be fine. They live in the U.S.
3: No medication.

Hi there,

Its important that the boy receives a proper neurological checkup for this. It is a possibility this could be epilepsy and if untreated, can get worse not better. If the fever is the trigger, it is possible that the seizures are triggered by a virus or possibly by a rise in temperature. The bottom line for me is that he needs to see a specialist. This is not something that a family doctor can handle by themselves and in my honest opinion seizures with fever IS NOT FINE. It is still a problem and needs addressing. People are becoming more and more aware of epilepsy and although there are some small minded people out there, most are OK about it and I dont think socialising should be that bigger problem.

I had my first seizure when I was 12, but there was no visible reason for it. I was just as against going to see doctors and talking about it as the boy you mention in your stories. Tell them to go see the specialist with the boy, at the boy's age it should be the parent's final decision not the boy's. They may be able to even help the boy with accepting the issue if it turns into a bigger issue. I agree with Darren though, if not looked at it will get worse. My parents ignored the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd seizures because they were weeks apart. They hoped it would go away too, but it is still with me at 26.

As for culture handling, my parents told parents of kids I hung out with, principals, teachers, etc. But, my parents gave me the option of telling my friends or other classmates.

My bottom line: Better safe then sorry, if he has the tests and they come back positive, then you can handle the issue right away before it becomes a big problem (he might not appreciate it right away, but later down the line he will...I know this from my own experience). If he has the tests come back with negative results, it can provide an uplift in the mood of the boy and family as well.
