Post-seizure questions from wife of epileptic

My husband has had epilepsy for 38 years and takes Keppra, Clonazapam, Neurotin, and Zonegran. We have been together for three years. He has a VNS and had RTL removed. Seizures are mostly noctornal petite mal. Last night he had three and after the last one he accused me' of getting mad. (when he starts having a seizure I grab his VNS magnet , throw covers off him and get to his chest to swipe his device). The last time he said he KNEW I was mad about getting woke up because he felt me' fling covers everywhere, heard me' sigh and huff in disgust. None of these are true but we spent the next 30 minutes with me' trying to combine him that I never acted that way! He's even accused me' of cussing under my breath before which I have never done.

I tried explaining that getting mad at him for having a seizure would be as ridiculous as getting mad at our children for being really ill or sick.

Is this a side effect of meds or something that typically happens after seizure?

     mktggurl, I hope I can shead some light into your question.I too take Keppra and I also take Topamax.I have had seizures off and on for about 30 years.I do know that with my seizures when I go into one I have an aura,I can tell when I'm about to have one.When I have one depending on the type I mostly don't remember what happen and sometimes I am very confused.

    If your husband has ever gran mal seizures for a long period of time I'm pretty sure they don't do the brain any good.I guess what I'm trying to say is he is probably more confused when having his seizures.When was the last time he hed an EEG,or MRI?Hang in there I know it can be difficult to live with seizures but really and truely your all he has when he has them.Hope I gave you some insight.

Thanks Pete. He had gran mal seizures frequently until he had his RTL removed. That was over 10 years ago. Yes, he did an EEG about a month ago and now they're trying to get insurance to approve a PET scan because they still see some hyper/abnormal activity in his RTL. Of course, seizures still happen once or more each night while we wait on the insurance company to say that they'll pay for the test.

Your husband's actions immediately after a seizure are a normal reaction after a seizure. It's called the "Post Ictal" state. It usually lasts a few mins.

It causes confusion, delerium, and/or irritability. It's not a side effect from the meds but from the seizure itself.

It's  probably better to let him "ride it out" and consider the source (the seizure) and that it is only tempoary.

I speak from 32 years of epilepsy and several epilepsy forums that I've been involved with.
