I'm really curious about why everyone acts the way they do with driving... I was always epileptic until I had surgery about 5 years ago. Like 99.99%of people with epilepsy, I always wanted to drive and have independence.... Well after the surgery, and I was seizure free for almost a year, everyone started to criticize me about driving!!! They were all looking at me like I was an idiot wanting to drive and/or to happy about it!!!

Why does everyone tell me it's not a big deal when you start driving, but no one can do without it once he/she starts??????
Why does everyone else celebrate it before they start, but love to make me feel like an idiot prior to starting??????

When I think of independence, I think of all the things I never experienced yet. The fact I never exp. them yet is because of lack of independence!

Party's, alcohol, sex etc etc etc

I can really use some help with this question because they all did serious psychological damage to me and I
can't get it out of my head.

I guess I am a little confused by your question. I am a mom of teenagers. How old are you? Driving is a big deal for any age. Many of us on this site have either lost our rights to driving or had them suspended so we do understand how important it means. The independence of driving is not able to be written on paper. I know, I have been without it for three months, depending on my 12 hr a day working husband for taking me places---------BELIEVE ME IT SUCKS. If you are a young person, I cannot imagine what a change it would be for you in your life having the independence of driving. AWESOME. Please just slow down for the other things that you want to explore. Don't rush life, mistakes cannot be easily fixed, and yes that can include driving mistakes. Enjoy your life, just take it slowly and that may be why those around you are not being very nice. Ignore the remarks. Who cares what they say. You be smart, slow, plan your life according to a plan and a future. You have no psychological damage to your head and don't let anyone get it your head anymore. You are in charge of your life. May God bless you. You are doing great, just by asking for help. :-)

I never knew what the fuss was about driving. I lived in NYC and a car was nuts. We walked, or hopped on bus or subway. I didn't drive 'til I was 40.

Now, in Maryland, I understand. I only moved 'cause I HAD learned to drive. All the main meetings for my profession, I've discovered, are in DC or even Virginia. It's a pain if you DO drive; an hour each way minimum. That's a pain for networking. And now w/gas prices....?

But w/o a car? Forget it! My husband's back in school at night, so he can't take me to evening meetings, but even during the day is WAY too long. Even basic things, like picking up my prescription, or running out for some fresh veggies at the market, or taking myself for a slice of pizza...I never had to think twice about that in NY. It's very discouraging now to be so dependent on him, or often unreliable services.

So congrats on moving forward! Don't look back...just ahead.
