any idea about medication for complex partial seizure?

Hello everybody,
I am new in the forum.
I have a twelve years old son who had been diagnosed with frontal complex partial seizures a year ago. He is on Trileptal and Keppra and because the seizures can't be controlled, the doctor added Depakine. It became worse and I'm looking for another option. Our doctor suggested Topamax but I'm afraid to try it because I read it causes memory problems.
Has anybody, from his experience, something to suggest?
My son follows a low carbohydrates diet and he's taking some nutritional supplements as well. Definitely I have realised how harmful sugar is.

I know going thru this can be physically and emotionally exhausting, but keep at it until you find the right drug for your son. Very important. You will all feel better when you find it!
Yes, I was on Topiramate (Topamax) for Frontal and Temporal Partial seizures. I personally had many side effects from this drug and had to go off it within two weeks. Watery and painful eyes, creepy crawly feeling in upper shoulder / back area, insomnia, memory, severe numbness in hands/ feet, strange sick feeling. I went off it to detox then went on Carbamazapine ( Tegretol).
I am doing much better on this drug. Not everyone experiences the same effects...we can only hope it works for us.
It can be frustrating finding the right medication and I did try others, but this drug works for me and I have learned to deal with the side effects.
I am also on Elavail. This helps to sleep longer.

Hello everybody

                         I am new to the forum as of today. I would like to respond to alkmini's request to other medications used to treat these types of seizures. I am currently taking a fairly new med called : LAMICTAL  / generic name is: LAMOTRIGINE ( La mow tra jean ). I ve been on it for almost a year now and it has been worked well in curbing alot of my seizures. Hope this helps wink

hi, i read your request and i thought i would add some information for you. like some of the other writers have added, many individuals will react differently to the meds and one will never know until you try. for example, i have been on many different meds with the complex and simple partial seizures i experience daily. i have also experienced one grand mal. the partial seizures were all temporal lobe and have yet to be controlled by any med but they have been "calmed down a bit". the problem i have now is that i do not know when i have the seizures. this is an entirely new change in my life. Topamax has done the best for me but my memory has gone to ruin when i am on it but does improve a bit when i go off of it and am on nothing. i believe the seizures have affected quite a bit of memory though. i have been on Keppra--i hated it and it affected me like a nut case. i was on tegretol and i overdosed successfully, the depression was so bad. i was on lamictal to no avail and i cannot remember anything about that med. i have been on many others but i honestly don't even remember the names of them, the span of time was so short lived. my neuros don't even look at most meds as possibilities for me with my history. i cannot imagine the pain of trying to find a med for someone else. it is so difficult for myself and often unsuccessful, i just hope and pray that you find what you need. good luck to you with your difficult search. maybe your son will out grow some of his seizure activity or change the activity style to a more manageable one. mine changed just not the way i wanted it to go.......

I am currently 55 yrs. old. My first epileptic seizure came at age 12. I have extreme grand mal seizures, and psycho-motor(a type of partial absence seizure) seizures. I have been alergic to Dilantin since the beginning,(my mouth breaks out in sores); so I have been on Phenobarbitol since age 12 to present, which controls my Grand Mal seizures. In 1979, I discovered a neurologist of "sterling knowledge and quality". He added ZARONTIN & TEGRETOL in hopes of controlling the psycho-motor absence seizures, which worked for a few years. Later the combination of PHENOBARBITOL, DEPAKOTE(similar to Depakene), and TEGRETOL were a winning combination; however, when I moved to another location, the sole neurologist, in the county, neglected to break down the numerous LONG-TERM SIDE EFFECTS OF DEPAKOTE. Unfortunatly, no Dr.'s enlightened me of the SERIOUS SIDE-EFFECTS OF DEPAKOTE & I remained on DEPAKOTE for 18 yrs.with --FAR TOO LONG always with PHENOBARBITOL! After I was taken off DEPAKOTE, TOPAMAX was prescribed in its' place; with my stand-by, PHENOBARBITOL. TOPAMAX was a hit-and-miss Rx, so TRILEPTAL replaced TOPAMAX. At first, we had difficulties adjusting the dosages and the amount of times taken per day; however, overall, TRILEPTAL has worked in a far superior fashion. DEPAKOTE or DEPAKENE has FAR TOO MANY SIDE-EFFECTS--SHORT TERM & MOST DEFINITLY, LONG-TERM SIDE EFFECTS. While TOPAMAX & TOPIRAMATE'S serious LONG-TERM EFFECTS aren't AS SERIOUS, they are still something to be considered. During my epileptic medication history, including LIVING WITH LONG-TERM EFFECTS of the aforementioned prescription meds; it is my opinion that the Rx meds with the least problems, overall, are: PHENOBARBITOL, TEGRETOL, & TRILEPTAL. The hardest problem for both parents & patients(children and adult alike), seems to be the tedious time it takes to get both the Rx and the dosage amount balanced within the patient. Take care, eventually all will balance out, and everyone will be able to take a deep sigh of relief. Keep doing your homework regarding Rx & their documented problems...you're on the right track!
