What is your experience with vimpat? Alone or with another drug?

I have been using topamax unsuccessfully but my other drugs tried in the past did not work: lamictal, keppra, lyrica, zonegran, tegratol. These drugs also have had bad side effects also soooooo. no I don't want to try surgery yet, yes they have tried more than once---too expensive and don't want to deal with the risks yet....so I have finally been convinced to do the dual drug crap now. has anyone tried the vimpat before? already have the prescription but not filled it yet---from what I have been reading I am not interested. What do the real users think? HELP Please confused

If you have used vimpat let me know how it affected you......thanks a lot.

Take note, I'm very new to this chat. But not new to eplisey. Considering we are in August. It may be to late. Or the drug is working for you. Every side effect, except depression n suicide, I received. But... Slowly as time trickled on. I even attempted to place a call to my neuro with more than one symptom. He called it a "adverse side effect", n ween me off slowly. Sad to say, not fast enough. Left my rear in a bind, with a tonic clonic seizure n Todd's paralysis. Take note, he was weening me off depokate er, to vimpat, and Im also on topamax. Now... Keppra, depokate er, topamax. Soon the depokate can go... All I can say, is I'll send a prayer. N relook for a response...

Thanks for the reply, Fallen Blessing. I started on the Vimpat. It actually worked on slowing down my seizure activity along with the Topamax (brand name only). I had to get off of it though, I could not handle the irritability at all. I also started to put on weight and that was the last straw. FYI, for all you Topamax users out there, beware if you use it for seizure control and enjoy the weight loss feature as one good things about it. If you stop using it for any reason and then get back on it ---the weight loss feature has usually gone bye bye and it is usually just like all the other drugs where you have to watch your weight gain, that feature is no longer there anymore... I am now on Zonegran (generic) with Topamax(brand name) and it seems to be doing much better for now.

Vimpat made me very short fused. Any little thing would make me angry. And that is not how I usualy am. I had the same problem with Kepra.

Me too with the Keppra....same thing with Vimpat. I would not say I am a whole lot better with the Topamax and Zonegran but until my seizures get under control by surgery or a miracle from the Lord, I am irritable with the seizure meds period. With the first two meds mentioned however, I was a *&%#! and I could not control it. I took myself off all of my meds once for about six months and I could not believe how much more clear headed and nice I was. I had seizures constantly so I had to go back on the meds, I wonder truly how much damage does it really do your brain to experience seizures versus this heavy medication?????

I have tried tegretol/carbatrol, depakote, kepra, and vimpat. Depakote failed miserably and didnt help at all. Kepra made me feel horrible, to the point of being suicidal, so I have stopped that. Vimpat gave me a fair amount of side effects while I was mistakenly taking the wrong dose, but since then I have pretty much been myself on it. I am still on vimpat and carbatrol while I am recovering from surgery, but that was 11 months ago now, and I have been seizure free since!

Everyone is different with each individual medicine, both with accuracy of stopping seizures and dealing with side effects, although I have noticed that just about everyone has major side effects from kepra. If it doesnt work for you and youve tried it out for a while, you can decide to stop it. If it is working but it is giving you horrible side effects, like kepra did for me, it is not worth staying on it. Other than that, the decision is yours.
