Think my daughter-in-law had a seizure

On June 16, my son rushed my daughter-in-law to the ER thinking she might have had a seizure. This is what they told me happened. She was lying in bed on her back when all of a sudden her arm when flying up onto her chest and she was "out of it" or as my son said "unresponsive" for a minute or so. When she came out of it and was again aware, she was having problems speaking (stuttering and having to concentrate on getting the words out). It scared them so off they went to the ER. While she as standing at the check-in desk, her leg started twitching uncontrollably. While she was in the exam room, she had a couple more episodes of involuntary spasms/twitches. Blood work, urine test and CT scan showed nothing. She was sent home after a couple of hours. On June 17, she had a few more episodes. She went to her family doctor who scheduled her for an EEG which she will have done this Friday (June 23). Since Sunday (June 18) she hasn't had any more episodes but is still having speech problems.

What thoughts does anyone have?

She needs to be evaluated by a neurologist to get a proper dx, this is not something her gp needs to be trying to handle. Please ask them to ask for a referral to one.

I told them she needed to see a neurologist and to have her doctor refer her to one. But I don't know if she asked or if her doctor will refer her after the EEG. Thank you for your response.

Queener, I agree with Susie. She needs to see a specialist, a neurologist. I have not had any episodes like this but from what I have read, this is not something to be ignored. Of course, they would want to check for any kind of medication or drugs in her system as a matter of course. In addition to an EEG, there might be other tests as well. I hope they can find the cause of this and have your daughter-in-law on the mend as soon as possible.

Well, her EEG results showed nothing. I told her I still feel that she needs to see a neurologist. Something is going on to cause this. She says she has some memory loss since June 16. Hopefully she will follow my advise and get an appointment.

Queener, she very much indeed needs to consult with a neurologist. Perhaps you can speak with her & your son to push the GP into making the referral. If he is not willing to do so, then they can call their insurance company & speak with someone & explain what happened. They can assist in getting her seen without the GP's blessing.

Susie, thanks so much for your thoughts. I sent her a text about an hour ago telling her again that I think she needs to see a neurologist. There was suggestions that maybe some of her medications might have caused it and her doctor discontinued some, but I personally think something else is going on. She was in the ER maybe 8 months ago for something, I don't remember what, and some of the imaging she had done showed small blood clots floating around in her lungs. There didn't seem to be much of a concern about those from the medical profession aspect. Got me wondering if those might have had something to do with this issue. Seems to me that the spasms (for lack of a better description) and the interruption of speech are a neurological problem and not a medication problem.

Kayly, its possible about the medications. Please get her to go to Drugs.com & plug in those medications. They give an extensive info on meds along with what medications will interact with other meds. But, like you I still would push for a consult with a neuro.

Susie,

Saw DIL yesterday. She agrees that she needs to see a neurologist so hopefully she'll get an appointment soon. Her speech is better, but not back to normal, she still has trouble remembering things and even how to do things. We grilled out last night, and she couldn't remember how to use a knife and fork to cut her meat. She had no problem using the fork to eat. Her doctors have changed some of her medication and dosages, which has brought some improvement. Will post any updates as I get them.

Kayly, I sure do hope she gets in with a neurologist as soon as possible. Did she ever go to Drugs.com & look up the side effects of the medication she takes?

Susie, She works in a pharmacy so she has looked up side effects and interactions of the meds she takes and has talked to the pharmacist. She is still having episodes of forgetting how to do things and issues with speech. I haven't heard if she has an appointment with a neurologist yet, but I keep urging her to get one ASAP.

Well, considering she works in a pharmacy & has spoken with the pharmacist about her meds, this leads me to believe this is not totally medication induced. I do hope you can persuade her to push for the appt because it will most likely be several weeks before she can be seen.

Talked to her when she was over on Friday. She has an appointment with a neurologist in September (I guess this is the earliest she could get in) so that is a positive thing.
