I'm seeing a epitologist for the 1st time next week!! , Topamax

As of late December I will I will have had epilepsy for 2 years and we(my doctor and I) have not been able to get my seizures under control all of the way. My doctor has tried has me on me on the 4th differnt medicine. Right now I am on 3 different seizure meds. So next week I am going to wee a epitologist. I am not totally sure what to expect.  Is this going to be just like a neuologist visit just longer and a lot more in detail? Also is there anything that you guys would recommend that I bring with me? I have already had my records sent. So I have that done. 

Have any of you been on Topamax? What have you done to deal with the side effects? I have having consternation probrams problems. Which is getting better as I am getting to a lower dose. I got to high for my body to handle:( Also have any of you had problems of just forgetting things  or have a hard time remembering things that you knew before you stared to take it? I am in college right now so my memory is especially important to me. I am trying to keep it all together. Last fall I had to go home mid-semester. So I was unable to finish my classes so this fall I feel like there is a little extra pressure on me to stay even though things things started to get a little out of control againl But last fall I had some grand Mals!! I have now been grand mal seizure free for a year which is really good but I am still have some twitches. And they some of them are big enough to drop things and to almost fall down. So my doctor wants things to get things all the way calmed down and I also have the "spaceing out" kind. So their is still some work. So I hope the doctor has some answers. Or knows what I should do next and I hope that it does not interfere with school.

Hi Turtlegirl.

An epitologist is a posh name for a neurologist who specialises in Epilepsy. (In the same way a paediatrician is a doctor who specialises in Children). In essence, it should be the same as seeing a neuro, but with someone with more experience and who knows more about modern treatments and diagnostics. It is certainly nothing to worry about. Assuming you are just talking about a consultation, the only thing you need to take with you is your memory. As long as you can provide him with info like when you have had seizures (dates as well as day/night) meds that you have tried and diagnostics you have had (E.g. EEG's and vEEG's) you should be fine.

My appointment went pretty good. Pretty much what we decided to de was take me off one of my meds and put me one a different one. He told me he had no idea why I was that med since it can actually increase the some of the seizure that I have. I do not remember which ones. Since then I have had fewer seizures:) Which has made school a lot easier. But I am not sure if things are quite right right since from time to time I do have problems with things like concentration even though it is a lot better then it was. I still get confused from time to time also. Just things I need to talk to the Dr. about when I see him again which is in the begining of January.
What is section 504? my profs. have been pretty good about stuff. They know that I have a health issue. Some of them know I have epilepsy, but not all. The ones that know I have epilepsy are really suportive.

Hi Turtlegirl,

I am glad that things have gone well and that your meds are being sorted. Topamax has a somewhat varied reputation. Some people think its a wonder drug and some people think its as good as a wet paper towel! As for section 504... I am not sure as this could elude to ANY section of a legal act. I am assuming you are American and when I googled it, the majority of the results refer to the Rehabilitation Act (1973). Section 504 in this case basically means that you are entitled to treatment without discrimination. (Thats the very short version!) If you want to know more, try googling it and see what you get... but I think I am right on this one.
