The Melbourne based team who invented the Cochlear implant is now working to help people with epilapsy. An implant which will fire electrical pulses through the brain to rid a person of seizures.
They are still in the early stages however, the preliminary model which could be used in human trials is only 18 months away.
For the 30 per cent of us who are not helped by medication, Bionic Ear Institute director Rob Shepherd said, "The brain implant would make a huge difference to people around the world. Once we are able to resolve the signature that says a seizure is about to occur, we can use this device to set in place those electrodes to stimulate the hot spot in the brain where the seizure is originating from to supress it."
The device would involve an implant below the skull near the affected part of the brain, connected to a power source placed in the upper body by wires beneath the skin in the neck
The only option for some of us is surgery, which I know only too well. I hope you find this discovery of hope and possible freedom from a life of seizures, an exciting step forward as I do.
