Did a mosquito really do this to me?

I was at a black-tie charity event I sponsored when it all suddenly began. I heard what I now call the "secadas", like the bugs here in the South that make all the racket at night, vibrating loudly in my ear. Since my teens I had heard tiny rings in my ear and experienced mere seconds of black outs so I knew I had better find a chair. I don't remember getting to my chair, but awoke to my friend Kat staring at me. I asked her what happened. She seemed surprised I could speak clearly, she thought I had gotten drunk and explained that I had skidded into my chair and when she questioned me about where my husband was (he had left just 15 minutes before to go to work at midnight on a ship) I was able to answer with the right words but not in the right order and my eyes were swimming in my head. But now, just a minute later I was fine, a little disturbed, and not drunk I might add- it was a business event. My guest Patrick and I decided it best to leave and as we walked through the squares from the museum to find a cab I noticed that when Patrick talked I couldn't hear him- at least from one ear. I had gone deaf. When we got home, the deafness gave way to the most horrendous ringing in the same ear. I woke up the next morning to the worst headache on that same side. I rarely take any medicine for anything, even headaches. That day I took eight ibuprofen and nothing subsided the pain. The next morning we found a physician and I went to see him.

The doctor turned off all the lights in the whole office, gave me shots, called one of my friends to come get me and sent me right away for a CT scan. The best they figured was sinusitis but admitted I wasn't very congested anywhere in my head. They gave me some strong painkillers and sent me home. It went on like this for 6 weeks. I have never had a migraine headache but they were telling me that the pain I was having was basically a migraine that wouldn't end. It was 24 hours a day, 7 days, endless. The drugs couldn't touch the pain. Some would calm me enough to keep me from crying out or knock me out for an hour and that would at least give my poor frazzled husband some peace. In my delirium I'd beg him or God to kill me and mean it. I was used to mastering pain with my mind, but this was in my brain and I had lost all control. I went to the ER twice. Was in the hospital for 6 days. Saw 7-8 different doctors and specialists so many different times I lost count. Shut my business that relies solely on me down for two months. I was prescribed 25 different drugs in 4 weeks alone. And I won't really go into all the other little pleasantries like narcotic side effects. I don't list this to get any "poor baby" replies. I don't want them. I need to hear from anyone who has heard of or gone through the same thing. I have been and am fully aware that I still have it pretty good. But I'm not done. . .

While I was in the hospital they did another CT Scan, MRI, Spinal Tap, Xrays, the works, but everything was clean. They were pretty certain I had bacterial meningitis and had me on lockdown when they admitted me but then ruled it out. Then they said 'it's probably just some sort of infection', just some sort of infection, maybe, um yeah. And we let them say it to us! I feel so dumb now! You wouldn't believe how many times my husband and I had to restrain one of our family members or friends from killing some doctor, we should have let them! They keep treating me for the sinusitis, even had a ENT seeing me.

So, bedridden for two months, no diagnosis, no drugs have helped. Actually wait, the only drugs that ever worked were steroids but no one would ever let me have those long term and I know enough about rx to know why but darn they sure made me feel better! Then my 1st neurologist's (or as I like to call him- the dude who saw me for 5 minutes and sent me to the hospital and was never heard from again) practice partner agreed to see me. Now Dr. G had seen me in the hospital and turns out his wife is my best client so the man knows all about my business and whatnot so that helps as he has major incentive to get my ass out of bed. He talks to me for an hour my first visit. Says he thinks I might have gotten bitten by a mosquito. A mosquito! And gotten encephalitis that has kicked up a pre-existing albeit small seizure problem. He orders eye tests, ear tests, EEG and puts me on Topamax and Maxalt and tells me I'm just gonna have to tough it out for a little while. Cool, tough I can do.

Nobody is probably even reading this but I'm wiped out. I know it takes no time to read, but with my gravy brain it takes forever to write so I've got to adjourn until another night. More to come because things change a bit from here and I've got a big appointment coming up next week so even more changes to come. God I hope I can get some help from y'all. I guess it feels good just to put it out there.

i dont know about the mosquito, i didnt think that mosquitos carried much around here except west nile.

But anway, the first part that happned to you at the party, sounds like what would happen to me when i was having seizures.  Or auras.  I would hear that sound, in one ear.  I would get a weird feeling, but know i needed to sit or lay down, and i would have like a 10 minute window or something.  i couldnt understand people talking, or talk myself, but i could write numbers, how weird is that, lol.  But then i would black out, and wake up feeling really cranky and ill, and out of it.  I could talk after that, but i wasnt right or something.

Anyway, after i got diagnosed and i have medicine now, i still sometimes get times where words get all jumbled, yet i can still understand numbers, but i can calm that down by reciting something in my head, over and over, usually the pledge of alleginace, just cause i know that.  My mom thinks it makes the paths straighten out in my brain, id ont know but it works.  But then i have a really bad headache, or i already have one when it happens.  Which as led me to belive that part of that is migraines.

Anyway, have they sent you home with the wires and such attached to your head?
