Disorienting Sunlight Symptom

Hello,

My daughter had one seizure six years ago. She is taking Lamictal and is symptom free aside from the fact that sunlight diorients her, especially in the early and late times of day. The sensation is almost like a short loss of consciousness, but her doctor does not think these episodes are seizures. Does anyone else experience this?

do you mean like when it flickers through the trees? i think that bothers everyone

No, not exactly. She can be standing still and she'll keep involuntarily "flicking" the sun out of her eyes with her hand, and she loses track of what she was saying or doing, temporarily. She also gets really irritated. I just wondered if this is common? Her neurologist never really picks up on this, so maybe it's nothing to worry about.

I am 59 years old and was diagnosed with myoclonic seizures in 2006.  I have a definite problem with sunlight which I have never thought to mention to my neurologist.

If I look up at a very tall tree or up at the sun, I had better be holding onto to something.  I definitely get dizzy and feel disoriented for a minute or so. 

I do not have a problem with driving in the sunshine.  I always have a good pair of sunglasses and put the visor down if it is real sunny.  My eyes have always been light sensitive.  What about your daughter's?

My eyes are so light sensitive, I usually wear sunglassess to drive on a cloudy day.

Thanks for answering. Yes, I'd say my daughter's eyes are light-sensitive (but not as much as mine, actually.) She works outside sometimes at her home-impovement store job, and usually forgets her sunglasses. She gets extremely disoriented and even irritable, out of the blue. But I'm taking her to a different neurologist in a couple of days. Hopefully this one will actually consider the question!

Thanks for answering. My daughter has a couple of weeks of school left and then her new neurologist is going to order another EEG. The one she had a few years ago showed abnormal activity, but no diffinitive seizures. So based on that, she's on Lamictal.

How is your son doing?

No, this new doctor isn't a pediatric neurologist, my daughter is 20 & she had her one grand-mal seizure when she was 14. Thanks for reminding me about the seizure triggers during an EEG. I'm going to suggest that they somehow test her while she's in the sun, if possible, because the flashing lights last time didn't make anything happen...it's only the sun that makes her spacey or whatever it is. The doctor says it may be abscence seizures.
