New to the forum and am reading up on epilepsy. My 14 year old son has autism and recently began having some rather odd "episodes" that the neurologist insisted were episodes of syncope (fainting) and not seizures. After I refused to let it go, he ordered a sleep deprived EEG...to shut me up?? At any rate, he did not warn us or tell us much about the test, but we went through with it. My son did fine on the test, but on the way home had a full blown seizure in the back seat of our car and we ended up in the ER. Because he had stopped breathing and was unresponsive (he was revived in the ER) they kept him in the PICU for three days and sent us home with anti-seizure meds. I am FURIOUS with this neurologist for never even bothering to tell us that the PURPOSE of the test was to provoke a seizure!!! Just want to make sure everyone who is having this test is aware of WHY your neurologist is ordering it and to be prepared. I do not know if seizures normally cause people to stop breathing or if that is a result of my son's special needs coupled with the seizure? At any rate, we nearly lost him due to the stupidity of a doctor who thought he was God, and I don't want anyone else to go through what we have just been through.
