Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, but not to epilepsy. I'm 39 and have had epilepsy since I was 17. Doctors have NO IDEA why I have it (no head tramua, high fevers, etc). My first seizure was after a visit to the dentist to have teeth pulled. I've been on Tegretol for as long as I can remember, and it's done a good job of controlling the seizures.

Lately, my wife and I have been exploring alternative treatments for epilepsy, and what we are finding is really amazing. However, I had a fairly unusual seizure last night, and I'm not sure why. I'm taken my meds regularly, and on time. I've also been taking a herbal body cleaning formula. This might have triggered the seizure....still not sure. My doctor wants to add ANOTHER drug, Keppra because he claims I had a breakthrough seizure. But we still don't know what caused this supposed "breakthrough" seizure!

I'd like to hear from forum members who are sick and tired of "dealing" with epilepsy, and who want to break free from this crap and start LIVING. If you're interested or knowledgable in this subject area, please write back. I would love to hear from you!!!

Thanks for the reply MandiAnn. Yes, my epilepsy is pretty much under control, but having a seizure, as you know, isn't the prettiest sight (my wife really hate seeing me go through this), and it is TERRIBLE for your body. I've noticed that as I get older and older it takes longer for my body to recover from a seizure. Plus, I've also noticed my memory slipping, which will only get gradually worse if I keep having seizures. I've been told that the meds along with the seizures can cause memory loss. This is a BIG CONCERN for me considering I make my living as an engineer.

I've tried to find alternative solutions to this problem instead of taking meds, but so far, nothing that I feel would really work. It really is interesting some of the things that I've read, and it would astound you at how much the doctors really don't know. I've had a slew of EEGs and MRIs, but still the cause of the epilepsy is unknown. Fortunuately, I do know what has triggered the last two seizures I've had, so I'm happy about that. But not happy about taking the meds.....right now, I can't drive and that is a HUGE damper in the family life.

I'm trying to find another neurologist who can deal with their patients medically as well as allopathically. Finding one seems like looking for a needle in a haystack! If anyone can help in this area, please write back. I would appreciate hearing from you.

My sister had her first seizure after visiting a Dermotologist and having a shot of Lidacane to numb the area.  (Didn't have the seizure right then but days later.)  Her second cluster of seizures came after a dental appointment and having another shot of Lidacane.  After researching Lidacane, she discovered that it can trigger seizures (not with everyone, however).  Apparently, she has a low seizure threshhold.  Anyway, they've switched her to something else so she can still have an anestesia when she visits her dentist.  Everyone is different; but that's our story.

I had my first seizure when I was 17 (I'm now 39). I had my wisdom teeth pulled (all of them!), and it was a MAJOR ordeal. They weren't sure why I had the seizure, but it was a tonic-clonic one, and scared my mom to death! My next one was 4 months later on Christmas. Ever since then, I've been on meds.

I've heard there is a link between seizure and dental work. Has anyone heard of this???

The only link I'm aware of is the anestesia (Lidacane) and seizures.  A link between seizures and dental work in general, I wouldn't think so.  However, I'm not a doctor.  I can only relate to my sister's situation.  Everyone is different.
