The definition of epilepsy is:

"a neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions, associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain."

It is the most common cause of seizures. There are many other reasons that people can experience seizures; these are referred to as non-epileptic seizures. Some NES can be transient, such as those caused by brain swelling after an injury. Others can be a recurring condition.
