What antidepressants are good--my son has epilepsy and low blood pressure and on trileptal

Hi--

My son has finally got set up at the free mental health and the doc happens to be one that he has seen before, before he was dx with epilepsy.  I am trying to get a list of antidepressants we could talk about when he goes in.  My son is 19 and is on trileptal and cannot take depakote and has naturally low blood pressure, so he has to be careful about anything that could lower it more.  So far trileptal has been a little bit of a struggle but doable.  I know some people take cymbalta and like it, any ideas from anyone would be good.  Trileptal is oxcarbamazapine (spelling?).  Thanks so much for any help you can give would help.  He has gotten so depressed he has just given up on school and withdrawn a lot, suffering with feelings of hopelessness and a general lack of energy.

Yes we plan to discuss with the doctor, just trying to get an idea of which ones people normally take with what so that if he comes at us with something off the wall, we know. The mental health care free around here isn't very good and you never know what they will try to do to you, unfortunately. I will have to check with my son on SSRIs, but he had a bad reaction to prozac, pretty bad, it did the opposite, made him more depressed and angry, but we wondered about welbutrin, though we've heard that's a no no with seizure disorders. We are curous about cymbalta and have heard good things about that. Just trying to find out what other people take so we have some kind of idea. I'm sure there are some new ones out there, just don't know. And I don't know if adding another AED like topamax or lamictal would help with the depression.

Thanks Darren, I know they all seem to have problems and so I guess he has to just try to see if something will bother him or not and work as it should. The doc is good but sometimes you have to plant a seed with him or my son will end up going back again and again with no meds and he has a few months wait anyway, but he is suffering so we want to make the most of the visit.

Carol, I'm so sorry to hear that, I am really sick now and my back is out and I can't stand or walk or sit or even lay without a lot of pain. I will figure out how to email you. I miss you and have been wondering about you, I've been on a really good liver support group and they have a lot of people with ai disease there and pbc and other stuff and it has been helpful for me. I'm on another pred taper and not handling it well at all. I will be praying for you, love marji
