My DH has been sitting in front of the TV half the day with CNN on. He is stressing big time which is stressing me out worrying about him. He is a small business owner and this all affects us greatly. Yes, we are in a scary time. Is it as bad as the TV is reporting, who knows.

 

I'm more concerned about his health than I am about the money. Stress and anxiety causes us pain and I'm feeling it from watching him today.

Yes I am!!  This is yet another sad day on TV.  I've been logging onto CNN & MSNBC all day here at work.  My DH is self employed so we have the same worry.

With the holidays right around the corner, fuel prices this winter, food prices...it is going to be scary.  I just pray we continue to get by the way we are. 

Tell your DH to hang in there and not to stress as that does bad things for our body!

Nearly all my money that I have on the face of this earth is in the stock market.  I'm not stressing yet.  I'm watching very closely what is happening but we have a very resilient nation.  We have come through a Revolution, a Civil War, a stock market crash, etc. and came out on top.  Our nation's strength is in it's working people and we have a "never give up" attitude. It may be rough for a little bit but we will come out on top...we always do.

 

Some of you are too  young to remember this, but in 1985, I think, (maybe 1987) the market went down 25% in one day!  Today, the market went down 7%.  So, hang tough ladies and gentlemen!  You may have to tighten your belts a little bit, but we will be fine.  Stressing about it won't change a thing except make you hurt more.  Just pretend you are on a surf board and ride the waves.

What would we do without our Little Miss Sunshine??? turn tongue I'm not as concerned about what is going on as I am him. He has himself worked into a frenzy over it and of course that worries me.

 

The waves to surf on are getting smaller all the time and we don't have much time for the ocean to fill up Sherrine. smilewinkgrin

 

We will all hang in there together M&M.

 

Our gas was down to $3.54 yesterday when I filled up.

 

If you just sit there and watch CNN, which I never do myself, it is unnerving cause they make everything sound worse than it is.

Hi Marlee, Sherrine & M&M! Been away from the board for a few days so It's so good to talk to y'all again. Been trying to catch up with everything that got put on hold for all those days Ike messed us up. Yep......this dang economy, what's happening in Iran, Venezuela, Russia and throughout the Middle East and not to mention all of the ugly poilitical mud-slinging/name-calling going on with an election right around the corner.....pick you poison, huh? Sherrine was right....that 778 point drop is the biggest one-day POINT LOSS in history but, from what I understand, nowhere near the biggest one-day PERCENTAGE loss. Today's reaction was a response to the big government bailout not being passed by the House. (There was one very small sliver of semi-good news however.....oil dropped $9 a barrel due to a sincere fear of slowdown and less consumption.)

I can personally vouch for stress issues being bad news, ladies. I think the Hurricane Ike stress we went through with our displacement from home, worrying about the in-laws places down in Galveston and seeing their stress and worry first-hand and not getting power back until last Tuesday finally took it's toll on me. I've been in major flare since I last talked to y'all sometime before last Tuesday.....lot's of serious pain, fatigue, brain fog and inability to sleep even with taking ambien. Left eye is in throbbing and stabbing pain in between ibuprofen-induced periods of semi-calm......I think it's time to see an eye professional to see if something else is going on. Plus, I feel like I can't breathe now with that cpap machine anymore......it's almost a smothering sensation at times which can really make you feel panicky......another stress reaction I guess. (I had to do without the machine for a few days so maybe it's just getting used to it again.) Ibuprofen is working pretty well on the pain but it seems to take more and more frequent doses for significant relief. I see the rheumy next month (thank goodness) and I suspect she will put me back on the glutathione/atp shots for another go-around to see if I can get back to where I was before nature and the rest of the world started going completely crazy! (LOL)

It's true about watching too much news. I remember hearing that people were sent into depression from watching news accounts of Katrina and 9-11 coverage. Maybe a trip out of the house would break the spell and the tension. There is nothing like simple pleasures to relax the mind. I took my daughter to have a port put in today for the chemo. She has to have a wisdom tooth removed Thursday. They told her it had to come out before the Chemo because her lowered immunity would cause even an infected tooth to be a danger to her life! She is still holding together well and charging ahead with treatment. I think her bravado is a defensive strategy. Sorry for changing the subject....just had it on my mind. I've had two interviews lately and I am waiting for THE CALL. One with the local Newspaper and one for a Library here in our small town. Either one would thrill me. We need the money...and yes we've wondered about my husbands retirement account. They swear it shouldn't affect us and the checks will continue to come. God knows and He will provide. It's funny when there isn't anyway you can fix things it is easier to just let Him handle it.

I watch it, but I'm in the same mindframe as Sherrine is. And yes, I remember that day that market dropped like that. But we do recover.

The only thing that concerns me right now is how many of our jobs have been shipped out. Before I left my last job I almost lost it due to outsourcing. Thankfully our union was able to re-negotiate contract to keep our jobs. I don't think it's going to be enough to send us into a tailspin, but I do believe that it may be enough to make it more difficult in the recovery.

We are very resilient though and I do agree, I think we'll make it through okay. Just another one of the bumps that we have to go through for our country to grow up a little more.

I'm glad to see positive thinking on this!  It will help all of you.  And Chuzzle, your post about your daughter puts everything in perspective.  You are also right to turn it all over to Him.  He has always gotten me through troubled times.

 

And Marlee, teach Ken how to do Lamaze breathing.  Really!  Also, don't watch television.  Nearly all the media tries to frighten everyone.  They are not happy unless everyone is miserable.  Take him for a walk and get him away from the television.  Watch a good movie together, etc.  I'm sure, with your creative mind, you can think of ways to get him away from CNN.   smilewinkgrin

What you all said about the news media is right on. My mom is semi-housebound and when Iowa was experiencing the floods early this summer she watched news non-stop. Quite a few local stations did flood news round the clock. She was very hyper about my youngest son who was in Iowa City and near the flooding, but it didn't affect him. She lives in Waterloo and their downtown area flooded for a few days. I think my mom thought the world was coming to an end, so the moral of the story is.....don't watch so much news! turn Diane

I hate watching the news, and this is why. The last time I read anythign on MSN home page, I felt sick to my stomach from the reports of world famine adn oil prices rising. Marlee, you can't be yoru dh's keeper. If he won't listen to reason (as in you telling him not to worry) there is nothign else you can do. Please don't take on his burden. Having said that,I realize you are concerned about his health, and of course your financial future. All I'm tryign to get across is please don't make yourself sick worrying about him too. You are in my prayers hon.

I believe the states will get through this. You are a giant in the western world. There is no way that this can get any worse than the reccesion in the 80's, and we made it through that all right.

John, I also pray that you will feel better soon. I can't imagine what a hardship this relocating must have been on you.

Chuzzle, your dd is AMAZING!! With that will power, she can do anything! Good luck in your job hunt!

Why stress?

#1. It's only money and you haven't lost anything until you sell. Some people who have money in the stock market start selling the moment it starts to drop...why? If you don't need to sell then sit tight like Sherrine said. The media is playing this for all they can for the politics of it. 7% back in the 80's was way more than the dollars today...it's just how you word it. If you want to get spun up, be my guest. But I'm planning on the market coming back up come spring.

#2. If you have a little investing cash around now it the perfect time to BUY! It's like a sale at the grocery store on canned olives at Thanksgiving. When the price goes down, buy up! Keeps your average buy price low.

#3. Turn OFF that darn TV...lol. For the most part they only cause trouble. Turn on the radio to some nice music and choose to enjoy life. Getting wound up over something you have no control over is wasted energy. Marlee...go pull the plug on his TV.

Make a nice cup of coffee or tea and curl up with a great book!

I really try not to watch too much tv. The biggest thing where im at in the southeast is we cant find gas to fill up our cars with, its supposedly to to hurricane Ike.  So kinda stressed about that, im near empty, gonna have to find a gas station with gas.

He had himself in such a panic yesterday that he was having tightness in the chest. We went to the ER and they did an EKG and put a halter monitor on him for 24 hrs. He has made some bad choices and he realizes that but what's done is done.

 

I can live poor if I have to but I don't want to live alone.

 

He seems to be more relaxed today. There will be no more watching the news channels in this house.

 

John I hope you get better soon. Yes, if we all just sit here and think of all that is going on in this world we will all be crazy.

 

Chuzzle, my cousin is doing well with her chemo treatments and the radiation did shrink some of the tumors in her brain. I hope your daughter has great success with the chemo.

 

I hope all these test on his heart comes back great and he sees how silly it is to get so worked up over money.

All we can do is take this one day at a time, yes, there might be some changes in your lifestyle, like you said, you can live poor. But not alone. I am glad that he has calmed down and is not watching the tv today.

I know how much you worry about him, you both are in my thoughts and prayers.

Marlee, I hope your husband will be okay and all tests come back good. I do understand what everyone is trying to say, certainly money isn't as important as our health, but I think with most men, it is hard for them to not be concerned. After all, for most of them, they have had to support the family. It's just a part of them and it is a difficult thing for them to not view it as important. Of course, staying away from the news channels certainly helps and that he CAN help yeah .

John, you do not know me, as most here, I am relatively new to this board, but not new to FM. Dx 20 years ago. I was, however, glued to CNN during Ike's destructive path over your area and I was thinking of you and said some prayers for you. I hope you are managing okay and will continue to keep you in my prayers.

Chuzzle, what you are going through...well, it certainly does put other issues in perspective. My very best wishes to you and your family and I will also keep all of you in my prayers. My heart goes out to you.

Well, guys, I DO live alone and it can be done.  I believe, as Chutz, that the markets will be back up.  Actually, it's up nearly 340 points now.  So relax.  There is a lot of hype out there and we can't do anything about it except don't listen.  It's not worth being miserable about.

 

Marlee, I hope Ken is feeling better today and I hope he realizes he can't sit there and listen to the negativity all day long.  I turned CNN off 9 years ago and have been much happier!  yeah

it is hard to adjust financially when you have been it my husband had to switch jobs 1 and a half years ago He took a $20,000.00 a year pay cut. We have had to cut back and yes there are months when i do what i call creative financing to make sure all the bills are paid. However we are togather and even the kids know that all there needs are met and if we have extra there wants are met We have learned not to be wasteful. My kids have become a little more thankful for what they have and what they get Which I can tell you makes me happier because i know that my children have learned a lesson both of them worked part time jobs this summer my son had to driven and i made him pay $5 a week for gas they are learning from a misfortune. hope that we all can I live by the philosiphy if a door closses on you check the lock then look for a window.

Marlee- I just read about your DH this morning. Hope everything turns out just fine. I know it has to be hard on your hubby to see what is going on. He, I'm sure has worked hard all of his life and with retirement around the corner, it has to be disheartening. It is nice to hear that your cousin's chemo is helping to shrink the tumors.

Chuzzle- My thoughts and prayers are with you and your daughter as she starts her treatments.

Jev- Hope this flare goes away soon- you have been through alot.

He is fine, they changed one of his meds. That was a big relief and a blessing.

 

Pam, I hope your DH is okay.

 

We are going to have to change our spending habits but that is a small price to pay as long as we have each other. We started out with nothing but each other and if that is the way we end up, so be it.

 

It will all work out for all of us. Maybe not in the way we thought but it will be okay.

 

We are all still better off than most of the world.

I watched part of a show yesterday about Africa and the AIDS epidemic and the way those people live and I felt like a whiny spoiled brat.

 

When you look at the big picture and where the people in the United States are in that picture we are all so blessed.

 

I write this while sitting here on my comfy couch with my little heater beside me cause mornings are a little chilly now on a little machine that allows me to talk to people all over the world by a click of a button.

Marlee, I just had a chance to read your post this morning.  I'm so glad your feeling better about it today.  I never thought of myself being depressed until just lately and I think I'm having the same problems that you are.

 

My dh watches CNN and Fox a lot and it is so depressing.  He is also on the go constantly and our gas prices for a month is unbelievable.  I keep telling him we have to cut back but he is bound to be ADHD.  We have cut back on eating out, because that was one of our biggest expenses and we both love to eat out.  (BTW, we ate at Cracker Barrel yesterday and it was awsome.)

 

Hopefully after the election things will start looking up. All we can do is take one day at a time and trust in God.
