How badly will surgery affect FMS

I am having a major surgery on Nov 4.  I have Crohn's disease and need to have 2 strictures removed.  I must say I am a bit concerned about how badly, or if my fibro will flare.  Anyone have any suggestions or experiences with this?  I'd appreciate any comments.

Please tell the dr you have fibro. It makes a lot of difference in the way you are handled physically, i.e. being lifted onto the surgical table, the way they position
your head and neck during surgery, and the positon of your entire body during recovery. I wished I had told my dr before I had my surgery, because I had a major flare with complications afterwards. Also tell the anestheologist. Sometimes
too much of that can make you feel worse. After you are in recovery, ask for very warm blankets, as your muscles may be stiff and sore.

Stephanie, I'm sooo sorry you have to have surgery. cry I have not had to have surgery since being dxd with fibro, yet. I know my neck would be a problem during surgery. I don't even have my hairdresser wash my hair anymore because of the wash bowl and leaning my head back.

 

There is a post on here somewhere about what to tell your docs before having surgery with fibro. I will see if I can find it for you. I think it will depend on how serious the staff at the hospital takes fibro in how you are treated. I know that is sad to say but when your out your at their mercy.

I had abdominal surgery last year and ended up having a lot of problems with my neck.  Actually, my neck ended up hurting worse than my incision.

 

I didn't realize that it could have been from the position I was in during surgery. It also could have been from lying in bed afterwards.

 

I agree with everyone about talking to your doctors beforehand (I wish I had).  If you have problems with your neck, you might also check into some kind of supportive pillows while you are healing.

Marlee,  I also can't get my hair washed at the salon.  My orthopedist told me that getting your hair washed in those washing bowls is one of the worst things you can do to your neck.

Stephanie, I have Crohn's too.  I had to have my colon removed two years after I was diagnosed with fibro and I had a quick recovery.  I actually was Christmas shopping at the mall 12 days after surgery...and I still had the 86 staples in me.  I had no flares with fibro, either.

Hi Stephanie,

 

I'm having surgery on November 5th!  Laparoscopic hysterectomy.  I've been asking the same questions.  I'm also concerned about my Fibro.  My biggest issue is going to be my neck.  I have arthritis in my neck as well.  Great combo!

 

I hope your surgery goes 100% perfectly and you come out of it with no flare ups.  I'll be thinking of you on the 4th!

I had a bypass surgery a couple years ago and they had me unconscious laying on my back with the head of the bed raised for about 20 hours (Semi-fowler position)without moving me.

When i came to the nurses could not understand why i wanted to get out of bed and stand up.
they thought i was crazy.. i guess they never ran into a EMT as a patient.
They had me on Morphine and added fentanyl and neither helped.
plus it did not help that i still had the airway in and could not talk.

the area across the back of my hips hurt so bad the i did not even feel the pain in my chest.

after about two hours they let me stand up. oh it felt so good.

I understand for those that are helped by gabapentin they can add it to the IV drip during your surgery.

I have had quite a few surgeries and some i reovered from better than others.  I seemed to recover from my vaginal hysterecmy fairly well i think.

I have had two breast surgies and the second one was harder to recover as fast, maybe i was laying longer period of time.  I had two knee surgies, and one recovered real fast from, the other too forever and was so much more painful. the second more painful one i let them give me general anthesia, so ii didnt need an epidural,well that was wrong,  The first knee surgery i had an epidural with vercet and i was still awake and could see on the screen what he was doing.  And since it was an epidural i didnt wake up in excrutiang pain like the other knee.  Both knees still bothet, but the one where i wasnt under a general, feels better than then one i was under.

And lastly i had an interstim planted in my scaral nerves to help my bladder, the trial surgery where i was half awake went great, recovered well from that, But the permanent stim where they had me completely out i woke up so sore my back was killing me, very painful.  So i guess i have had a mixed bag of reactions.

Thank you all so very much! I do have a terrible neck. Osteoarth., stenosis, spurs, blah, blah. My surgeon did see that on my chart, but I will remind him too. I will tell the anesthesiologist too. I really appreciate all your efforts to help. I will happily take the prayers! Thank you.

Funny about the hairdresser. I have very long hair and like to perm it once a year. I can't anymore becuase of those sinks! They kill me! Even with towels on it for padding.
