This off topic - but I thought chutzy would appreciate it especially.  My duck is sitting on eggs.  The chickens don't have any better sense than to lay eggs right next to her and the duck thinks those are hers, too.  So she scoops them into her nest and sits on them and we have to shoo her away to get the chicken eggs.  And she waddles around the pen with her head crouched low fussing at me.   We put some chicken eggs in the nesting boxes and it looks like the chickens are catching on. 

I don't know much about chickens and ducks - the ducks were moulting and I thought they were dying and nearly took them to the vet before I figured it out!  rolleyes Sue

I wonder about ducks. I'm not convinced they're too clever. We once had a female duck that sat on a nest of 72 eggs. We only found the nest because the eggs on the bottom had gone off and burst and had stunk out the entire garden...

Wow! Real people raising real animals! This is way cool! I've never raised an animal for food in my life so I don't know anything about this but I love this peek at real life stuff.

Today I discovered that all the little ducklings had hatched and they were all dead!  sad    I don't know what went wrong.  I think I should have separated her from the drake and the chickens.  Very sad.

Oh, Sue, I'm so sorry... Maybe you can find somehting on the internet about raising ducks?

I've been checking.  Could call the feed store, too and ask them.

Oh! I'm sorry! Maybe she didn't ahve the right foods to feed them, or she didn't know to feed them. The drake could have had soemthing to do with it too. I would google it. I used to raise cockatiels.

I think they need to be in a incubator. Not sure. I have 2 ducks in my pond and I walk around the pond and the ducks follow me.The neighbors around the pond laught at me for it. They sleep in my yard and come to the beadroom window when thye want  food and let me know about it. Mine lay eggs but never hatch. She rolls them in the pond. Everyone calls me duck lady. It could be worse.....

OMGosh Tink!  My actual native American name is duck woman!  For real!  In my native language it sounds much nicer, but it translates to duck woman!  We (our tribe) are reclaiming our culture.  We are learning our language and naming our tribal members.  I was named a few years ago by the chief: duck woman.

How funny,  One of my neighbors got the ducks for the kids and then moved so i kinda adopted them. Can you tell me why they loose the feathers so much and maybe why her eggs do not hatch...

Tink, I don't know a lot about ducks, but I have had them as pets a lot. I had a little duckling that slept in a box by my bed and would cry and not go to sleep unless my hand was in the box. When my ducks were moulting a couple of months back, I thought they were dying. But their feathers fall out about twice a year and they grow new ones. During that time they cannot fly or protect themselves. I know they are moulting when their vibrant colors all disappear. It is especially evident with mallards.

From what I've learned, a duck's eggs can be put into the refrigerator for 48 hours after it is laid and then put back into the nest and still hatch. They don't start sitting on them until the eggs are all laid. Then after that, it takes about 25 days. I had two female ducks who weren't very smart and laid eggs and sat on them. There was no male to fertilize the eggs. I didn't realize I had two females until they both had two nests of eggs. Now I can tell them apart. There are a few reasons eggs won't hatch and some people prefer an incubator instead of mother duck keeping them warm. You could probably get more info onlne on duck care websites.
