Like many of you I have a low tolerance for noise. It simply drives me up the wall when I can hear noises from outside such as dogs barking or lawns being mowed. I swear the houses in my neighborhood are too close together. If all my doors and windows are shut I should not have to hear all that noise pollution coming from neighbors houses. It just makes me so irritable and sometimes I even find myself getting so angry that I fantasize about hurting whatever is making the noise(not that I would ever actually do such a thing). And sometimes the sounds actually make me feel sick. A lot of times it will give me a bad headache, but other times like right now, the noise is making my ears feel painfully clogged and I feel sick to my stomach though not enough to loose my lunch. And besides any physical and emotional discomfort that it causes me, it makes it very hard to meditate when I want to because invariably when I start to do it, some neighbor decides to start doing yard work.

I swear times like this I wish I could mute my ears so I don't have to hear anything. Unfortunately ear plugs don't really help that much even with the highest rated ones which I own. They are decent at night when I am sleeping but can't stand up to lawnmowers and leaf blowers during the day.

Well I'm gonna go try some crackers for the nausea. I'll also put on some music with headphones, hopefully that will help drown out the evil loud irritating noises from the neighbors lawnmower or leaf blower or whatever the hell they're doing.

Can you play some music to drown it out? We can't control what our neighbors do. I have the same problem. My neighbors like to party. So there is loud music in the middle of the night. Luckily we got new windows and it cuts down on the noise some. The snowmobiles bother me the most in the winter. They hit the throttle when they go by and they whine so loud. It is awful.

Try to keep your mind occupied, maybe listen to some music to drown it out. I know this might not help much, you have probably already tried all of these things. So I guess relaxation is the key. And keeping your mind busy so you don't notice it so much. But know that you are not alone. I go through this too. And it is such a distraction.

Well I did say at the end of my post I was going to try music. I've got my headphones on now. It doesn't drown out all the noise, if I wanted to do that I'd have to play the music louder than I could stand, but it is helping. Still feeling the nausea, but I'm hoping the crackers will help with that soon.

I am so jealous of my aunt, she owns over 300 acres of land so she never has to worry about noisy neighbors. Well here's dreaming of someday living somewhere with more space in between houses.

Anyway thanks for replying, as always it's a comfort to hear from people that go through the same things that I do. *hugs*

I'm sorry Kythe but the thing that stood out in your post is you live somewhere they are doing yard work, must be nice. It is a gloomy 29 degree day here.

 

I live in a very quiet neighborhood and in the summer I do hear mowers but they don't seem to bother me. However, when my grandchildren are here the noise gets to me. I was ready to come undone a few times and scream at them but I didn't act on that either when they were all here for Thanksgiving. I hate that I'm that way when it comes to my grandchildren cause I do love when they are all here. Okay, this sounds crazy but I can't sleep without the TV on at night, DH and I have been sleeping like that for many, many years. I think it started when the bad anxiety started and I needed something to concentrate on so my mind wouldn't go a 100 miles an hour when trying to go to sleep. But if he gets up before me in the mornings which he usually does except on weekends he turns the TV on in the family room to some news channel and has to have it loud to hear it and it grates on my nerves like nails on a chalkboard for some reason. I don't get physically sick from noise though.

Actually Marlee it's pretty fairly cold here but not as cold as where you are. I think the high is 40 degrees today. Still kind of nippy for yard work though.

I can so relate to how you feel about your grandkids. I don't have any myself or even children, but I do have 5 parrots, two of which are cockatiels. When the cockatiels start singing it can really grate on me. It's just that they are so shrill that I can feel my eardrums vibrating. If they were just a tad less shrill it wouldn't be so bad. One of my other birds mimics them and that doesn't drive me up the wall because his voice is a bit deeper. It's funny I used to love their singing when I was a kid and now it just drives me up the wall. There have been times I've lost my temper and yelled at them and I hate myself for it, so I'm really trying to work on it. I tend to spend less time now in the room where they are located, but I still go in there to say hi and talk to them to make sure they know they are loved.

My hb painted the house this fall. When the guys were scraping the old paint off it sounded like nails on a chalkboard. What I can't stand is when I am doing dishes and the silverware clangs together. It really puts chills up my spine. Just thinking about it bothers me.

Kythe, I can relate with you too.  My triggers are also my grandchildren & my husband with his TV up so high.  I don't know what causes this but we all seem to have it.  I can just feel it rising & I try to calm myself.  I agree that relaxing is the key.  I can walk out of the room & find a comfortable chair & just veg for a few & I will calm down enough to "be nice about it".  It is a symptom of Fibro like all the rest.  Sometimes just knowing that helps me.  I hope you find some peace.  Hugs, Denise

There is a sound therapy machine you can buy in madical supply outlets and some drugstores. there are like 7 or so choices, rain, wind, waves, heartbeat, running water , white noise and birds singing. I had one when my son's were teens and everybody hung out at our house. i also would jam a towel under the door which helped block the noise.

OMG some mornings DH will sit in here to eat a bowl of cereal while watching the blaring TV and the spoon scraping the glass bowl almost makes me go for his throat and he does it til every drop of milk is gone. devil

 

Krissy's crying at this stage is shrill enough to break glass. I have a little cage for the car that I put the seatbelt through to keep her safe. I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown last week when I took her to the vet and it's not all that far. I took a half a xanax when we got there I was such a mess. I know she will get use to the cage and be happy to be going somewhere but I think next trip I'm getting ear plugs. It was funny cause when I would stop the car she would stop crying. I was waiting for every window to shatter.

My german shepard does that, once the car starts moving she barks. Tries to attack every car that goes by. But she has this high pitched shrill bark when she does it. The first time that she did it I wasn't expecting it, (she was 10 months old when we got her) and she jumped accross me after the car and almost caused a wreck.

My hb has the tv on really loud all the time too. Drives me nuts.

I'm new here But have to ask Does anyone think there Hearing is like Bionic at night ? For some reason I can here every little noise when I lay in bed.My kids say I have super hearing when I climb in Bed.lol

i have that same problem-every little noise keeps me awake! i use a white noise machine so that i can sleep. during the day i can usually block most background noise out, but when things get really loud-kids yelling, tv blaring, dogs barking at everything, i can't take it and have to go have a "time out". too much noise all at once really, really bothers me. (just one more reasons why i HATE MALLS!!! lol)

so, kythe, how are your noise at home issues going? have you found something to help??

Noise is also a problem for me when trying to sleep. My mother coughing on the other side of the house is enough to wake me up, or keep me awake if I haven't fallen asleep yet. I use ear plugs at night which help for the most part but sometimes I still get woken up. Of course as I said in my original post, the ear plugs really won't help much at all for certain loud daytime sounds like neighbors mowing or whatever.

OMG I COMPLETELY understand what you are saying. I work in an office and I tell you, these people just will not SHUT the hell UP! They are always jabbering on about some mindless crap and laughing loudly and of course the two ringleaders sit on either side of me. I seriously cannot concentrate when they are talking and as you said, I am overcome with an overwhelming feeling of wanting to hurt....I just imagine chucking a stapler over my cubicle wall and the pleasing thud I would hear...it drives me that insane. I think this goes along with something I had mentioned in a separate post...."Rage Attacks". I try listening to my MP3 player but then when their nails-on-a-chalkboard voices carry thru over even THAT, then I get REALLY irritated. OMG one of them is talking right now. And loudly. And about NOTHING. Where is my stapler????

Oh I know exactly what you mean there. I simply cannot concentrate on what I need to do when there's people around me talking or other noises. I also have a problem doing things like dictation because I just can't focus on listening to people and typing at the same time. If someone wanted me to answer phones and do other work at the same time, I just couldn't do it. That kind of multitasking is next to impossible for me.

Yeah that's what I do! I answer phones and do accounting. It is so hard to concentrate on numbers and what's going on with the phones when there is constant noise. And it's not like I can do anything about it. And if I threw a stapler, *I* would be the one in trouble. Go figure, lol

Kythe you are not alone!

Loud noises bother me too. And the older I get the more I don't like noise. I also have to have it completely quiet when I go to sleep. As far as my hearing, I can hear a mouse sneeze! I have blamed alot of it on being a mother and having super sensitive hearing. Now you can add fibro to it.

I have one neighbor that rents rooms out to some pretty shady people. One of them has a very noisy, LOUD piece of junk truck that he starts every three hours during the winter months and at all hours of the night. I swear one of these nights I am going to go charging outside at 2 in the morning with my fuzzy slippers and pajamas and read him the riot act!! He is totally inconsiderate of others. It's people like that you can't change though- they just don't "get" it and never will.

I do not get the nausea though - that cannot be fun mad

noise agitates me as much as my chemical and light sensitivities, if not more. i feel like climbing out of my body, i want to scream at everyone to shut up-its awful. my biggest problem? cutlery. i hate washing it, i hate hearing others wash it and throw it back in the drawer- sounds petty but drives me NUTSO.
