I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia on 1-13-09 and also Psoriatic Arthritis on 12-2-08.I am currently going thru my 2nd.major flare up of the Fibromyalgia and I cannot believe how bad my body hurts and it is so hard for me to walk on my legs.I was totally normal June '08 and then in July '08 I had to have a total hysterectomy and things have snowballed from there.I have been in the hospital 7 times now since July and I hope the DR's finially have figured out what is wrong with me.I am 44 years old and walk like I am 144,I do not know anyone who has Fibromyalgia or Psoriatic Arthritis so I am here to learn all I can and hope you all have some tips on how to deal with this.Thank you all for sharing your experiences,it does help those of us who have just been diagnosed.

Hi Tammy,

I'm 46 and was dx'd with fibro in April of 2008. Mine is the result of cervical trauma, which was discovered in Jan 2007. I have been in a nasty flare since the end of September, and have not been able to work since. I have been seeing a rheumatologist recommended to me by my neurosurgeon. We are working on a variety of meds to help me deal with the fibro pain, as well as some permanent nerve damage from my severe spinal cord compression.

I've come to realize that I cannot fix my fibro, just manage it.

Good luck, and I hope that you will find this website to be helpful! Others that have been here longer than I will be able to direct you around. I do know that it's a good idea to check out the Fibro 101 thread for some useful info!

I also have a rheumatologist and they have started me on Lyrica and also methatrexate but I have been unable to take the methatrexate because I am fighting another lung infection.I was wondering how long these flare ups last and I guess they can last a long time(yuck yuck yuck).I have been off work now for 1 week and I am going to go back on Tuesday and see how it goes.I cannot believe how painful Fibromyalgia is,this has to be the worst type of pain a person can have.I have a verry high tolerence to pain but this is horrible,it is actually taking my breath away.Thanks again for the reply and take care,,,

Welcome Tammy,

Sorry that you have to join us. However, this is the best place to be if you have fibro. There is also a pretty good arthritis board here.

I too have been unable to walk much since I had surgery several years ago. However, I do not want yo to think this will happen to you. With the right medications, you can feel better. I would also like to suggest water exercises.

Well, hang around and have some fun. The others will welcome you when they awaken.

Hi Tammy,

I was just diagnosed with Fibro also, in the beginning of December, but started with it about a year ago now.. the cause of it is still not certain, there are a few things actually that could've brought it on. I am only 21, and recently married!!! I am unable to work at the moment.. my flares seem to come and go, but I definately have much more bad days than good. Right now I am in a flare where it just feels like I have an extreme case of the flu (except the pain is much much worse of course).. I even have problems with severe weakness in my legs where some days it's a struggle for me to stand or even walk. I am still learning a lot about Fibro and how to manage it, so you and I can learn together=] This forum will help you loads, it has for me!!!

As Donnaeil has suggested, there is a good arthritis board here as well!

Hello Tammy,

I too had a hysterectomy before my diagnosis. But my doctor thinks that my numerous other diagnosis had led to my fibro. Welcome, I am new here to and was welcomed very warmly. People here are great.

Sorry you are in so much pain. It does get better, we never know how long a flare will last. There is alot of good information on the thread 2nd from top called "Fibro 101" and of course you will learn alot on the forum.

I was diagnosed in August, '07 and my Rheumatologist still has to try different medications once in awhile when my pain changes or the medication no longer works for me. I've found that showers and heating pads help for awhile. I also do the stretching exercises in "Fibro 101"

Stick around and you will find that there are some great people here to help you through the bad times and to give advice when we all need it. This has become like a 2nd home to me. I hope you start feeling better!

Hi, Tammy, and welcome!  I see that Margie directed you to the Fibro 101 thread.  There are links in there with good info about fibromyalgia.  You will learn a lot about it and, as they say, knowledge is power.

 

Moist heat is great for fibro.  Hot showers and Bed Buddies feel great.  You can find Bed Buddies at Walgreens and other places or you can make one using a tube sock.  Fill the sock about 2/3's full of raw long grained rice and tie a knot in the end.  You microwave this and it gives off moist heat.  The moisture is in the rice!

 

You do need to keep moving with fibro.  If you sit or lay too much, you will be stiff as a board.  There are some good stretching exercises in the Fibro 101 thread and walking is great for you.  So is water aerobics and swimming, if you have access to a pool. 

 

Also, be sure to pace yourself when doing things.  You can't do things in the same time frame as you used to.  It will get done but it will take a little longer. 

 

Read back posts and ask questions, too.  That's what we are here for!  Im so glad you found us and I hope to hear more from  you soon.

Welcome aboard. You've come to a great place to learn more about fibro and maybe have a little fun in the process.

Hi Tammy and Welcome-

I'm 52 and just got fibro late last winter. I had all sorts of symptoms to start with and had an MRI and tons of blood work done with all tests being normal. Then came the pain! Literally dropped me to my knees and I have a high tolerance to pain also. I have not been able to work since this hit but I am starting to get my life back with the group here, support from family and friends, a good Dr., Physical Therapy, and walking. It was slow going but I have gotten quality of life back. You will manage this and start to live your life again too.  

Keep posting, vent, ask questions, and join us when you can for our daily Koffee Klatchs, was nice to meet you!
