I have tried eating more fiber and I still end up having to take MOM"s after about 4 days. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! confused

I am on a narcotic and it stops me totally from going to toilet I dont know if you have it over there, im australian but a product called nulax which is natural and is senna based, large amounts and I can go every day, parrafin oil in large doses helps also and is cheap.  Hope Ive helped, ive tried alot of stuff, also sorbilax can help its sort of like parrafin but not as strong.   sue2z

Activia Yogurt. No kidding. Not only is it very tasty, it works within two weeks, if you eat it on a daily basis. I know this for sure. I used to take a senna laxative and I did not appreciate the uncomfortable feeling at night. Cramping pains in my stomach. Then I accidentally ended up with a fair quantity of Activia and soon felt much better.

It won't hurt to try the Activia but make sure you eat it every day for a few weeks. Our local Costco has it for a decent price plus it goes on sale a lot. You can also get it in larger containers but then you have to pay more attention to serving size.

I've had the best luck with magnesium. Magnesium is the active ingredient in MOM so you already know it works for you. Magnesium comes in different forms; magnesium citrate, magnesium oxide, etc. Some work better for constipation than others. I can't remember but I think mag citrate is more easily absorbed but mag oxide is cheaper.

Finding the right dosage is trial and error. Fortunately, it is an inexpensive supplement. It's also great for fibro pain. Many people have found that it reduces their muscle pain and spasm at least a little.

If you decide to use magnesium, be sure to talk to your doc and pharmacist to make sure it's the right stuff for you.

Meds can slow down the system.  Wheat toast (store bought wheat bread) can help a little.  And if you've ever had the real wheat bread (home ground and baked) that'll sure do it.  hehe ... do NOT eat a whole lot of it at first, no matter how good the home baked stuff smells and tastes.  It's very coarse and you have to ease into it. 

I'm taking supplements and hormones to try and rebuild my immune system - the Lyme has totally trashed it.  One of those is magnesium and, as was already mentioned, it works.

Relistor works wonderfully for narcotic-induced constipation, it's a prescription that has to be given as a shot but it's made just for people who get constipated from pain meds. And NO it doesnt cause withdrawals at all, it's not supppose to, I know from experience. Eventhough it's made from naltrexone, it's made so it just goes to the pain recepers in the intestines and it doesnt cross the blood-brain barrier, so it wont mess with the narcotics your taking for pain. It's about $50 an injection if your insurance wont pay for it, but it's well worth it.

Hi,

Since I have gone on the malic acid/mg formula voila totally regular. Now I followed Sherrines advice and gradually increased the dosage, actually did it over many weeks. Now not only is my pain more manageable but the constipation is no more. Understand it can cause diarrhea if added too rapidly.

ALSO my dad was the best country doctor ever. He advocated a glass of very warm water with a huge squeeze of fresh lemon first thing out of bed. Great liver "detoxer" too. Many think coffee does this but actually it doesn't, it is the hot liquid but coffee not great for the bowels...

Thanks for the med name Relistor.  I will ask my doc as I have narcotic induced constipation and am at wits end.  sue2z

Hi,

I had narcotic induced constipation. My doc just told me to buy Metamucil tablets. 2 each day got me back on track. Hope you find something that works for you!

I use Activia, or Fiber One products: yogurt, toaster pastries, bars. Benefiber is good, too. I got a bunch of it for almost nothing recently. the kiwi strawberry stix are great in water bottles. The powder is tasteless and colorless and you can add it to literally anything. I stir it in my cereal, yogurt, in soup, etc. Oh, and Kashi Go Lean is great! But, it's very high fiber and protein, so I suggest you ease into this one gradually!
