New Member "Everyday Pain" can't sleep! Suggestions?

cry hi, i have taken my nite meds AND CAN NOT SLEEP.i take Halcion right now,have taken other meds including ambien cr,but still have trouble falling and staying asleep. the t.v. is off,my room is dark and quiet,bought a new mattress...does anyone have any info about a med that could help? i have a doc appt on friday, and would like to discuss trying ANOTHER med 4 sleep.it is 3:45 am and i won't be able 2 leave the bed 4 the day if i don't get some sleep.any suggestions? thanxs Mo

Hi Mo and welcome to our fibro family!

Wow, suggesting a particular medicine is sort of hard to do since we all react so differently. If I were you I would write down notes like you did about and take that to your doc. Describe in detail your sleep pattern for a few nights....make it sort of like a sleep journal. Then let the doc suggest what he thinks is the best solution. There are lots of different ways to help break this sort of pattern but you may have to try several to find what works for you.

Maybe, until then, try a warm bath in the evening, be careful about what you eat and drink after supper time...you know, all of those regular things like no alcohol, etc. I read and it relaxes me. If I had to lay in a dark, quiet room I would never get to sleep. I would toss and turn worrying all night. I know we're not supposed to have a TV of but I often use it for "white noise" and fall asleep fairly quickly most nights.

Hi Mo, nice to meet you & welcome. I have alot of insomnia too. What has finally worked for me was cyclobenzaprine 10-20mg (generic Flexeril) at bed time & melatonin. Flexeril does not work for everyone & some have found it causes them fog or grogginess but for me, none of that. I still have my times of insomnia but I have just learned to live with that, I guess.

Have you had a sleep study done? I think that might help you alot. They can detect all kinds of problems that may be causing your insomnia. I have read that sleep apnea is one of the myriad of symptoms you can have with Fibro. For me, that is one symptom I don't have to deal with. But there are good treatments now for it. I hope you find some answers or things to try. Chutz gave you some good ideas. Take care!! Hugs, Denise

Hi there Mo!!

I have alot of insomnia problems.  I take my meds about 2 hours before I go to bed.  I take Elavil, xanax, & tramidol.  But that still wasn't enough to get me to go to sleep.. its SO frustrating!!!  The doctor told me it would be ok to add an over the counter med called Unisom.  Now I finally sleep!! AHHHH.  I only take a half of one.

I also keep my bedroom as cool as my poor husband can stand.. I'd have it downright freezing if I could.  I have a lot of hotflashes and night sweats so I need to keep it really cool in there.

I don't drink anything with caffine after 2:00 pm (I go to bed at about 8:30 and lights out at 9:00.)  I wake up every morning at 5:00 to get hubby to work.  I NEVER take naps during the day.. no matter how tired I am.  If I do.. then I don't sleep at night. 

My sister used to do sleep studies and she recommended learning about sleep hygeine .. so those were some of the suggestions she gave me.  I also looked up sleep hygeine online.

I hope you can get some sleep.. I really feel for you.. I know how frustrating it can be.

Hi Mo and welcome. I have to have relaxing evenings with as little stimulation as possible, I cut out caffeine after 5, I take amitriptyline and xanax before bedtime, bed has to be comfy (no wrinkles in the bottom sheet), I have the TV on old shows that I know the voices so I don't have to watch it to know who is talking and I'm usually asleep within an hour at the most. Sometimes I do wake around 3 or 4 in the morning and if I can't go back to sleep I take another half of xanax but I try not to do that unless I have to.

 

If this continues I think I would have a sleep study done.

I take Trazodone to help me sleep. Technically it is an anti-depressant, but it is very mild. It really helps me to sleep. It is a very amazing drug. And I have never had any bad side-effects from it.

Hi Mo,

So that I can sleep, I keep my room cool and dark.  I too have the TV on for the "white noise."  My show of choice for this is Nancy Grace.  I can just lie in bed with my eyes closed and listen to her.  I keep the volume low, too, so that I do not get very stimulated by it.
