Lidocaine Infusion?

My doctor wants to hook me up to an IV drip of lidocaine for six hours, has anyone herd of this? I thought lidocaine was only to be used subcutaneously? and the whole idea makes me nervous.. skull confused

The thought makes me nervous also. I have never heard of that type of protocol for fibromyalgia. Maybe it is something new.

Its supposed to work really well with little side effects for longer pain free days.

I don't know if I would do it for 6 hours. That's 6 hours out of my time to do something else. But if nothing else is working for you I would still ask the doctor why he/she wants to do that to you.

Hi Poppy,

I usually post on the CP board, but I happened to stumble across this thread. I can't tell you too much about lidocaine infusions, other than that my doc is looking into this for me as well. I guess it is a relatively new thing that they are trying with people who do not respond to opiods and other pain relieving treatments. Supposedly it works pretty well, but I will have to do much more research before I give it some serious thought.

I have had lidocaine injections (for a optical nerve block for migraine headaches) and my neurologist suggested that the next step if the headaches didnt get better would be lidocaine infusions.
If you have migraines as well as chronic pain (alas fibromyalgia) the pain management gets tricky because many of the drugs you would use to control one will set off the other. So it is not odd that your doctor is having to be creative.
Always get as much info from your doctor as you can, write it down and keep a diary of your reactions to the different Rx you have been put on whether positive or negative. So many drugs are similiar, it may spare you having to repeat an unwanted reaction with a cousin Rx.

I use lidoderm patches for pain that is close to the skin, like my hands. My doc will only let me use one at a time. I also take liquid lidocaine for gastritis if it is really, really bad, which isn't that often. I would have to do a lot of research before I did the infusions cause you can OD on lidocaine that is why my doc will only let me use one patch at a time with the other meds I'm on.

Hi all: I have been having IV and subcutainious lidocaine infusions and it is wonderful. I am on fentanyl patches as well...but I get 4 days of ALMOST NO PAIN! My Dr. started giving me the take home subcutainous lidocaine infusion over about 15 hours..and its wonderful. The in hospital IV infusion I have had done over about 3-4 hours. They day I have it done (for either way) I am very drugged feeling...but I just take that day to rest/sleep. the next 3 days I feel wonderful with much less side affects. So I would totally recommend it - no need to be nervous. :-)

I searched lidocaine infusion and came across your post. I am going to have my first infusion of either lidocaine or ketamine on Monday. I was happy to see your post. I am hoping so much for a good outcome. Have been on every fibro drug with no help and have been on fentanyl patches and Percocet with good results but still not good pain relief-- at least what I would consider good quality.

I had the Meyers cocktail which was useless. Do you have the infusions on a regular basis? I am having three this week and three the following week. I would appreciate any info you have on how it affects your pain and the amount of time it takes as well as how often you have them etc.
