I have had fibromyalgia for about 20 years.  My pain, for the most part, has been relatively mild.  I have had some bad flares, but not all the time.  This morning I felt like I had a crick in my neck only it was a little lower than my neck.  Now, I can hardly move without severe pain at the base of my neck down into the upper part of my back.  I have tried otc meds and a heating pad.  It hurts when I am still, but not quite as bad.  Is this normal for fibromyalgia?  This is one of the areas that I usually flare, but I don't ever remember it being this bad.  It is usually just very achy.  This is sharp pain along with the achy.  I hope this makes sense.

Thanks for any info.  I don't have insurance, so I cant just go to the doctor unless I really have to.

Maybe you slept wrong.  I've had that happen.  If you can reach the area, try gently massaging the muscle and then use moist heat and see if that helps you.

I get pain like this quite frequently. You might want to try something like Icy-Hot or even Capzasin (but be careful with capzasin-- when I tried it, it burned my skin). As far as OTC meds go, the only one that ever helped me a little was Tylenol 8 hour. You could also try valerian root, which helps to relax and calm the body, and is also supposed to help with pain.

I get this type of pain at the computer. (I'm taking an online MT class.)  I watch my posture, etc. but it creeps up on me every day. I use the Icy Hot type of ointent and Salon Pas patches, take Neurontin or Flexeril, and use a heat-in-the microwave piece filled with rice that I drape around my neck.  All these help somewhat, but it's still rough and pain makes it hard to concentrate.

My neck is one of my worst flare points. I have a muscle that just gets rock hard and sends pain shooting up my head and down my left arm and shoulder. Muscle relaxers don't touch it. I take a combo of Tylenol and Aleve, use a heating pad and pressure on the muscle.

This is a trick I learned while training as a massage therapist:

Use a thumb or a small ball like a tennis ball (depending what is most comfortable for you) and put pressure on the problem muscle. Start with light pressure and gradually increase it for a count of 5. Release. Repeat and keep increasing the pressure. This cycle of pressure will signal the muscle to FINALLY relax. You will notice residual pain lessening, but you may have tenderness in the problem muscle. I do this several times a day and it helps tremendously during my worst flares.

                  I am going through a similar thing right now it hurts so bad , I am actually sitting here with ice pack on neck right now , seen rumey for it today , he is sending me to PT for it said it is fibro , mine is at the bottom of my head on rightside down the neck , he called it rye neck , don't know what that means . Mine has been going on for about three months and when I hit flare , it started throbbing on a pain scale it is a 10 . first two months it would come and go thought it might be a migrane or tmj , It hurts so bad I was wishing rumey would  give me a shot in the head with steroids to make it go away , cause I also have connective tissue diease , but he said nope it is the fibro , I started crying cause I know how long this can take to go away , I feel for you and hope you feel beter real soon . take care

When I'm tensed up pain starts in my shoulders and neck to. I ended up in the ER three times within two months because of it. I hurt so bad all I could do was stand up to get some sort of relief. I threw up immediately when I sat down. But they did give me good care and drugs...hehehe
