Hi Marlee -

I posted this question in the IBS forum yesterday and nobody has answered yet.  I see in your signature that you have both gastroparesis and IBS...

Now that I'm avoiding fiber for the gastro, my IBS is flaring up.  What do I do now?  How do I keep both under control?

My doc told me to take imodium, it stops the IBS in the colon but doesn't slow down the digestion in the stomach. I can't take a lot of it or it goes the other way. I also have donnatal rx for really bad cramping but it usually hits me so fast the donnatal doesn't have a chance to start working. I have also found that cheese helps the diarrhea for me but again too much causes constipation. I haven't found anything that allows me to live a normal life when it comes to going out to eat and stuff cause I never know what my colon is going to do after I eat, sometimes eating does nothing and sometimes as soon as I eat the IBS starts. Do you notice a lot of gas after you eat???

Yes, a lot of gas. Eating out is definitely getting to be a problem. Sunday I had turkey, mashed potatoes, a little asparagus, and some chicken soup... and I barely made it home in time. That hadn't happened to me in quite a while so I was really upset that because of the new gastro restrictions I have the IBS to deal with again. Very frustrating. Thanks for your suggestions. I can certainly eat more cheese! I'll get some imodium, too. Do you take it regularly, or when you have symptoms, or just when you eat out??

Your welcome Donna. I had a foot of colon removed years ago cause of diverticulitis and every since when I have to go, I have to go. I only take imodium if I'm having a lot of diarrhea. On a normal day I will go a couple times after I eat and that is it. We rarely eat out anymore, we do delivery or pickup and I don't like eating at other people's houses unless they have more than one bathroom. It's very hard when we travel cause I can't eat til we get to the motel for the night. It sucks having all these digestive issues. This week so far it's been my stomach that is acting up for whatever reason.

Yeah we had really gotten into the habit of eating out since I never have the energy to cook. (Or if I do cook, the dirty dishes sit around for days waiting for the energy to clean up.) But I can see the eating out is going to have to end. Even if I do manage to find something on the menu that the GP diet will allow, I will still get sick just because I will inevitably eat too much of it. And then, as you say, you just never know what will happen with the IBS. Dang.

Try adding the inability to vomit to the mix Donna. I had surgery several years ago for GERD (I think that is when something was damaged that caused the gastroparesis) and now I can't vomit. I made a doc app for tomorrow cause I don't think anything is moving today either direction. shakehead If I start heaving it means a trip to the ER to have my stomach pumped, not pleasant to say the least.

 

I don't eat a lot of meat except for fish and a little ground beef but the other day I had a roast beef sub. I thought it would be fine since it was sliced so thin but maybe not and I don't have any of the med that is suppose to help with digestion.

 

I want a new digestive system for Mother's Day. smilewinkgrin

Oh geez, Marlee. I hope you won't have to go through that - it must be awful. I have a good Friend - He gets around a lot and He's really good at fixing stuff - I'm gonna ask Him to help you to avoid that trip to the ER. ;-)
