I had my first epidural for my back yesterday, it was very unpleasent and hurt quite a lot but was hoping the benefits would be worth it.  I was told by the doc that it may be sore for a few days before it starts to work, it may not work or it may make things worse, well I got the 1st one so far, the pain is 10 times worse and I don't know what to do with myself, has anybody else had one and if so what did it do for you? cry

Sharon, I have never had this done.  I'm so sorry you are having this type of reaction.  You had enough pain to begin with!  I know we do get desperate to try things to help us.  Hopefully this will turn around for you and be helpful. 

The only thing I can suggest is stretching those muscles and using moist heat.  I wish I could offer more help but I really don't know much about epidurals for fibro.  I believe it is a steroid that they inject you with so I'm surprised you are having the reaction.  Let us know how you are doing.

I've had them, didn't do a lick of good. Just took me two to three days to get over the "procedure". The injection sites where PAINful. Frustrating I know! When I had them done over a years time (3 of them) I hadn't been diagnosed with Fibro yet. They were all done by the pain clinic. I personally had bad experiences with my pain clinics I went to.

Btw, welcome to the forum. Its the best place I've found myself for good info and a great place to get needed support.

Hi Sharon.  I'm also assuming that you had a steroid epidural.  I've had three (or maybe four? - fog).  I had them done several years ago for a herniated disc, but unfortunately, they didn't help a lot.

 

I seem to remember an increase in pain initially, especially with the first one.  I know that the nerve was really irritated from the disc, so the steroid medication aggravated it more when I first got it.  Did your doctor tell you to lie in bed for a few hours afterward?  That's what I had to do.  After a couple of days, it got better.  I think the epidurals may have helped shrink the disc a little, but I did end up having to have surgery anyway.  I do know people who have found relief from steroid epidurals and DON'T have to continue on to surgery.  I wish you the best of luck.

I had 2 of them last Aug/08. They left small bruises where they went in, but I felt great the day of, the area was frozen I couldn't fell anything. For 3 or 4 days after though there was still some pain.
The injections did take the inflammation out of the area for me and kept it away for 6 months. It's been touch and go since then, I just use ice packs most everyday to try and the swelling at bay.
