I am in mourning as of 11 pm(ish) last night. My dear and faithful heating pad kicked the bucket. It was an aqua heating pad that had cold and hot settings (though I never once used the cold). It was blue in color, and is just as beautiful in death as it was in life. I will really miss you, dear heating pad, I spent more time with you than my husband. Though you will be replaced, you will always be missed.
Now if everyone could just have a brief moment of silence.....


This post is just made in a joking manner, and I hope it didn't offend anyone. I really will miss that thing, and maybe I did spend more time with it than my husband lol. Heat helps my leg pain greatly, and the day or two that it will take me to buy another one are going to stink. Anyone have any tips on what I can do in the mean time? I take hot baths but I can't spend all day in there (although I might like to).

Cute... :) Poor little heating pad... I know I'd be equally as sad if my massaging heat pad that I use for my back kicked the bucket.

I'll send up a nice thought for your heating pad. And long live the new one.

I agree. This is a time of mourning. I will contribute 2 minutes of silence to your dearly departed heating icing pad.

Oh yeah, I've actually found bengay or other such topical creams to be helpful in the short run for muscle and joint pain... it's not a long term solution, but it helps me some.

I too will mourn your heating pad kicking the bucket.  Mine has three settings and only the lowest one works now...which is hardly worth the electricity.  She is an oldie but goodie and I will be off to Walmart in a few says to replace her.  My butt won't know what to do without her.

OMG....So sorry for your loss Mrs. T. At least you'll have some fond memories to get you through. :-b

If you have some long grain rice (uncooked of course), you can fill up a tube sock part of the way and the tie it off good and then pop it in the micro for a minute or two. I use it for my neck/shoulder area sometimes. Maybe it could do in a pinch. ;-)

OMG Mrs. T, I thought OH NO did someone else lose someone or a beloved pet. I'm so sorry Old Blue flat lined. Here you can go outside today and sit in the sun for heat. I've not seen the cold/hot pads.

 

I'm glad Lori thought of making a sub til you get the new one. I am brain dead today. I think it was the mammogram with sub zero temp and then walking outside in the heat that gave me a headache that caused my brain to die.

Oh I didn't think about bengay working, and I've never heard of the rice in a sock thing. That sounds like a really good idea, especially for my neck, like you said. Thank you for the suggestions. I would go outside, but we've had nothing but rain all week and today is no different.
Sorry about the mammogram Marlee, just one of those necessary evils, hope the rest of your day is better.

Mrs. T -- sorry about your loss, but I'm so glad Binki mentioned the rice-in-a-sock. You can buy "professionally made" bed buddies lots of places, and they are nice, but I really like the homemade ones better -- you can sort of mold them around whatever body part needs it the most. My daughter made me a new one a few months ago and she doesn't fill them too tightly for me. She even made my little dogs a small pillow shaped one, because they kept stealing my rice bag whenever I'd leave it for even a minute! (I have two chihuahuas so they are always under a baby blanket, lying right against me, or whatever, since they always think they are cold! They aren't spoiled, of course.....LOL)

Yes Shash13, I really like the sound of this rice thing. I have a couple of questions though, that I didn't think to ask before.
First of all, does it have to be long grain rice, can I use white rice or even instant rice? I have some instant on hand, but I don't want to try it out if it's going to cook in the microwave or something.
Secondly, how long do these last? Does the rice ever go bad or anything like that (I hope that's not a stupid question)?
And lastly, Do they hold the heat for a long period of time, or just a couple of minute, such as a hot wash cloth?
I thought I had a fourth question here, but....well, the fog got me I guess.

On another note, I go to the clinic tomorrow, so I would appreciate all your prayers. Just hoping for a few answers and some solid treatment plans...and anything else you can think to pray about that I probably forgot to mention.

By the way, you're all great!! I love coming here, thanks for making feel so welcome. <3

Step 1: Tube sock, Step 2: fill 3/4 with any kind of rice tie end of tube sock#3: put in microwave and heat about 3 mins less or more. check it to see what the temp is for you. every microwave is different. #4: put on area that hurts. Yes it does keep the heat, you do have to reheat it though because it isn't like your past friend. And when you do heat it up it can smell like popcorn, or something like that. Hee hee. I really haven't tried it with instant rice, but it should work since you need water for rice to expand. Let us know if it works for you. And my condolences for Ol blue also.

I used regular white rice for my sock buddy and it works fine. I also used a super long knee sock so it's nice and long and can be wrapped around just about any body part-it's also purple and pink striped, so it's pretty, too! haha. I put mine in the micro for 5 minutes. It's super hot that way and burns for a second, but then it feels sooooo good. I'd say it stays warm for about 20 minutes or so.

And my hubby says it smells like a Chinese restaurant. tongue

Will there be a viewing/wake?  What time is the funeral??  Where shall I have the flower sent??

I'd let you borrow mine.............. no wait on second thought.. ummm NO!!  I don't think I could live with out mine either (I know my little dog, chihuahua/min. pincher.. would probably run away if I ever lost my heating pad.. I don't know who loves it more..me or him?!?!)

My condolences to you MrsT. The rice sacks are great because they give off moist heat. I have made them with a little dried lavender inside and I have also tried dried chamomile too. As long as natural fragrances do not bother you and you are not allergic, the herbs can help with relaxation. Just do not use too much of the herbs, just a little bit goes a long way. I also have found ActivOn has been great as a topical in place of a heating pad. I use it on my neck, shoulders and down the back of both legs and arms when the nerve pain gets bad. r l

Again, I am sorry for your loss...companions are companions no matter what shape or color!

RIP little blue comfy guy! OH how I understand your feelings of loss! Hopefully you can make a new friend soon. :)
Back when I was having daily migraines, and wore that blue ice bag on my head constantly, I always thought I should have a portrait painted of myself for my kids......with that blue ice bag on top of my head! haha
Good luck finding just as perfect a friend as your old blue was! Can you have it stuffed and mounted on your wall? ;)

Just wanted to say thanks for the rice sack tip. It works beautifully, and I love it. I just used the instant rice I had in my cupboard, and it seems to work fine.

My suggestion for when you go to buy a new heating pad: Buy two!! It is a pain when they break and you are without them, so buy a backup and always have one on hand that way!!! I finally got smart and did this!!

Mrs T.  If it isn't too painful, I'd like to ask you if I might have the 'warning' label off the cord of Ole Blue.  It probably says 'do not swim or bathe while using this product.'  I have a lengthy collection of warning labels, such as a Twinkie wrapper that warns that 'the cellophane is not for human consumption' and hornet killer that says it is not to be sprayed in the mouth or eyes.  I hope you haven't had her cremated yet.

Thank you and I hope your sock filled with rice is doing the job.  Make sure when you are done with the rice you do not throw it outside for the birds, as they will explode if they eat it.

vestablua, I just looked and It doesn't have a removable warning label. All the warnings are printed on the actual heating pad. It says it's not to be used by infants or invalids, or unconscious people...but there is no way for it to be removed, sorry.

Oh, that's a pity but I always wanted to be unconscious and turn on my heating pad...Thanks anyway.
