Off topic but need help!

I don't know Donna if it soaked clear through there may not be anything you can do but replace it. My sister had a 17 yr old cat that had lost control quite awhile before his life ended and he had one place in her dining room he went and she had to replace the carpet and pad. Getting it professionally cleaned might help a lot and get you through til fall.

 

I had a big area rug between the dining room and kitchen that had been used as a pee pad so I cleaned it with my carpet cleaner the other day and then had Ken carry it outside and I rinsed it with the hose and let it dry. It doesn't look like it ruined it but it's not going back down til my house is pee and poo free, if that ever happens.

Donna, I don't know of any product that works completely.  I used the Petzyme from Petsmart when my last golden was old and had her accidents but that only happened a few times.   My husband and I owned apartments for years and we had to replace the pad and carpet if we couldn't get rid of the smell in some of the worse cases.  I think a few times if we had the carpet cleaned and it was newer we just replaced the pad.  The urine soaks into the pad.  However, my husband and sons knew how to take a wall to wall up and relay it.

I hope you can get some help with this.

I have used dry tide laundry soap before and that helped a lot.  

Also, I did this before fibro and could not do it today, but maybe you can get help.  It would get rid of the smell until you can put in new carpet, but is a lot of work.  And it depends on what floor you have under your carpet.  We have concrete floors.  In my home office I just pulled the whole thing out: carpet, pad and all and threw it away.  I cleaned the floor with bleach heavily diluted with water.  Then got some inexpensive concrete paint and painted the floor.  I used the kind that you put in one of those pump sprayers that sprays insecticides and stuff.  You spray one color on then when that is dry, use a spray bottle to put on splotches of another color.  Then seal it really good if you want it to last.  If it is only temporary, you might not have to seal it.  Then put an area rug down.

I grew up with 10 cats and 4 dogs, I have 2 cats and a dog now, and live in the same house I grew up in. My mother's a nurse and taught me how to make a stain and smell remover. It uses dish soap, peroxide and water, and takes out oily stains as well as organic.
When your dish soap bottle has an inch of soap left, pour in one inch of peroxide and fill the rest of the way with water. It works best with the $1 bottle of Dawn from Dollar General, but I've used other dish soaps in the same size bottle and they work well too. It can be put in a spray bottle as well, but sometimes the peroxide can kill the interior metal workings.
As soon as I find a spot, I soak up the urine with a towel, then spray with the mixture, let sit for 10 minutes and then soak it up with a towel. I've also used 1/2 cup of it in my shampooer. It was originally intended as a laundry stain remover which it is awesome at, even removing old blood stains that have been washed and dried.

I have used Nature's Miracle for years and for me it really worked, even on carpeting with padding. The only thing is, you need to let it sit for about two weeks and then reapply it. They have this black light you can get from the pet store, not buy it, just use it and it will show you where you have missed spots. I have had cats and dogs for over 25 years and plenty of them have had their share of accidents. I had a Bichon with an attitude that would pee in the house "just because" and he'd do it in our bedroom which was carpeted. Since he's been gone, I had the carpeting replaced and wondered about the floor beneath which is wood and there was absolutely no smell in it. My nose is super sensitive, I know I'd smell it if there was a smell there. I was buying it by the gallons, but you have to use it several times, especially if you have padding underneath the carpeting. As far as the kids, I don't know if it is safe or not. I would think the safest thing to do with small children would be to replace the carpeting or try to keep them out of those rooms, which I know would be really tough.

Pet odors like that never really go away. We may get to the point where we humans can't smell it, but other animals can. I would suggest going ahead with the steam cleaning, but, if there is still some staining, try some OxyClean. That stuff is AMAZING! It's not just for clothes. It is for carpet, upholstery, everything like that. It works wonders. Make sure that you go with the steam cleaning. The main thing you want to do is make sure that it is sanitized. The odor may remain, but as long as the actual harmful stuff is gone, then there really won't be a problem for the little one who crawls. The only thing to do to get rid of the entire odor, though, is to get a new rug. Sorry to say, but it's true.

We had a cat once, and he would get mad and pee or poop on the carpet right in front of his litter box. When we got more cats in the house, they would smell that, even though the carpet had been thoroughly cleaned and we couldn't smell anything, and they would pee or poop in the same spot. It was crazy. We got them out of that habit, but, every once in a while, one of them would pee in that spot. So, you don't ever really get rid of the odor. Sorry. I hope this helps at least a little bit.

I am a certified Cat Pee in Carpet expert. Allow me to present my credentials! :) When I was taking care of my Mom, who was senile, she used to open the front door and invite (or carry) every cat in the neighborhood into the house because she would mistake them for our own two cats. It would be like a free for all. I'd come home and strange tom cats would be asleep on my bed after eating a ton of food! So, these stranger cats would "mark"/spray on my cats' stuff. I got so stressed about it... until I found organic apple cider vinegar. It has to be organic and it has to be apple cider vinegar- there is an amino acid from the apples in the vinegar and it is THAT amino acid that neutralizes the cat pee. If I'm not too late posting, rent one of those steamers that looks like a vacuum and steam your carpet with organic apple cider vinegar and hot water (1 to 1 ratio). After the vinegar the smell may not be completely gone- that will be taken care of by the professional clean after the vinegar. Good luck! I'm so proud to share my cat pee expertise....!
