On Medrol for a week

Yesterday I woke up with the most unbelievable blinding pain. I went to my doctor and she said I was "just having a bad flair." Personally I find her use of the word "just" pretty hilarious. If I didn't laugh I know I'd end up curled in the fetal position sobbing and rocking back and forth. Anyway she gave me a week's worth of Medrol and told me to come back in a week. I started taking it this morning and was wondering how long does it take to feel any relief?

Do you have an autoimmune disease. I ask because medrol is a steroid and steroids do not help fibromyalgia. It would be great if they did.

Donnaeil is right.  Unless you have active inflammation going on, the medrol won't help you.  In fact you might feel worse. cry Fibro isn't an inflammatory disorder, so adding steroids to the mix doesn't work.  Do you have any other diseases that would warrent the steroids?

I have not been diagnosed with any other autoimmune disease and my doctor only suspects I have fibromyalgia. I have had chronic pain since I was 3 or 4 years old and have only recently gotten doctors and my parents to accept that I'm not faking or exaggerating. I live with the general feeling of being run over by a bus, but the last few days have been 1,000 times worse than my "normal" pain. Is there anything I can do to get some relief until this bad flair passes? Should I call my doctor about the Medrol?

How are you feeling today?  If the medrol was going to help your pain, you'd be getting relief by now.  That stuff works very quickly.

 

Was it your rheumy who prescribed the medrol?  I would definitely call the doctor who prescribed it and find out exactly why you were given steroids if you don't have inflammation.....

 

What other pain meds have you tried, or are taking now?  Personally, the only medication that gave me relief was Neurontin (Gabapentin). I can't take it anymore as it messes with my platelets.  Low dose Amitriptyline works well for some people.  Tramadol is a potent pain killer that works for some.  Makes you really drowsy though. 

 

Hot baths, or as warm as you can tolerate is always relaxing and can help.  How is your sleep right now?  If you're not sleeping well, your pain will likely be worse.  I know how hard a flare up is to live with.  I'm sorry you're going through one right now.  Let us know how you're doing okay?

Yeah I went to my rheumtologist and she gave me the Medrol.  I'm not feeling any better today.  The only med I am currently taking besides the Medrol is Cymbalta which works wonders on my mood but doesn't do much for my pain. I find it disturbing that I can be happy while in this level of pain.  As for pain meds I've tried thats a pretty long list.  I have tried Neurontin, Lyrica, Savella, Depecote (sp?), Verapimil (sp?), Vallium, Flexeril, perscription strength Ibeprofen. None of these worked for me. I've also been prescribed Hydrocodone when I had my tonsils removed and it made me sick.  I have not been having problems sleeping except the pain worse is always worse right after I wake up.  Oh well I just hope its over soon.

Thanks for your suggestions. It really helps knowing I'm not alone in this.

The Cymbalta may take a couple of months for you to feel it working well. Getting pain relief takes trial and error. You probably have to change your lifestyle by pacing yourself and finding and exercise program that works for you.
