I had a really good meeting yesterday....

....with the VP of our "Community Relations" dept. This is the area of human resources where the focus is on charity, education programs, mentoring, and a whole host of other community programs. It's an area of our company that I learned about recently and am extremely eager to get my foot into.

A friend hooked me up with a friend in the dept., who in turn got me a meeting w/ the VP. He is an extremely inspring man, started out as a janitor in one of our stores 30 years ago....now he has a beautiful corner / window offices, knows the CEO personally and is still a wonderful, modest, easy-going person. He was one of the most inspiring people I've ever met. We talked for a good hour and seemed to both enjoy the chat.

At the end of the meeting, in a careful way (he's not supposed to recruit in outside depts. and I am not supposed to formally ask for a job w/o my boss knowing), he let me know that when a position came open that he felt was a good fit, he would definately reach out to me. He also gave me information on 3 volunteer opportunities that I am eager to begin.

I have been smiling non-stop since my meeting!! :)

I need to get some thank-you cards out to those two people who helped make this happen!!

I'm looking forward to the volunteer opportunities too. There are three that he mentioned (though, there are many more avail.):

1 - "Everybody Wins", is a program where volunteers read to an elementary school child for an hour a week. I think this one is pretty common, though a great idea.

2 - Big B / Big BS, now this is nothing new, but our company arranges it so that the kids can come to the office! They have them transported here, then the kid spends a few hours with you, going to meetings, etc. This helps the child gain exposure to a professional environment & gets a big brother / big sister relationship going where the big b/s can commit to the time during their workday.

3 - Noonan Business Academy - kids from an inner-city school come to our company for a day and we set up classes for them, so that they can learn how things work behind the scenes in the corporate world. We even set up a "mock" buyer / seller scenario and have the students negotiate everything involved with a purchase. It sounds pretty cool!

It makes me very proud of the company I work for. I was floored by all that we do for others, and it's unadvertised.

You are such the "Go Getter"! :)

The Big B/S idea is great. I used to be a Big and it was very difficult finding time outside work to properly mentor someone.

I would also really enjoy the Business Academy. That sounds like alot of fun and super helpful for kids who need to find a better way.

That is terrific that you used to be a big brother! Yes, it is very difficult to find time outside of work to mentor or make a long-term committment. Because of this, my volunteering has remained sporatic over the years.

So, it's terrific that my company goes out of their way to help employees volunteer during work hours.
