Hi,
I was going to post yesterday when I read about eating more protein. I've found when I eat more protein, I do seem better. However , recently I got proof positive in my case. I had been reading an excellent book by a functional medicine doctor (The Ultramind Solution by Mark Hyman MD) in which he writes about several tests he uses to diagnose what is wrong with his chronically ill patients.
The one test that really stuck out to me was OAT (Organic Acids Test). I ask my NP for the test and she agreed. It is a 24 hour urine test that measures the amino acids in your body. Amino acids are what proteins are made up of. Organic acids are byproducts of metabolism. I am quoting from Dr. Hymans testing guide--the test"helps identify vitamin B deficiencies as well as problems with fat, carbohydrates, and energy metabolism;oxidative stress, the gut, detoxification, and even neurotransmitter function."
To make a long story short, I had the test and most of my amino acids were extremely low, or low moderate. My NP was very suprised and immediately started my on a amino acid protein powder made by Thorne called Mediclear. Within days I started feeling so much better, more energy and just basically stronger. I have been on the powder for about 3 months (I make a smoothie and add the powder) and continue to feel better. To say I am "cured of fibro" would be a big lie. There is no cure for fibro. I have had several flares since being on the amino acid powder, so they don't go away. But I do feel better and stronger most of the time.
I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth to this discussion on protein. I've had fibro for 40 years but continue to keep looking for more ways to make my quality of life better.
