new to fibro, but not the pain

Hello, I am new to fibro dx. I have been dx'ed with discoid lupus for 3 yrs. I had a major setback in June. I was so sick & hurt so bad I have not worked since then. I have seen several docs. I just got into the rhuemy I have been wanting to see for months. He has been the first doctor I've seen to actually take me serious. He took 20 tubes of blood checking for all kinds of things & to make sure my lupus had not progressed. He has gave me the med zanaflex. Is anyone familar with this?  I have not worked up the courage to take it yet.

Hi danab, I have seen you on the lupus forum. I have Mixed Connective Tissue Disease and
Fibro. I am glad you have found a good rheumy. With all the bloodwork they are doing, I am asuming they are checking your complete blood counts, comprehensive metabolic panels,
sed rate, ANA and antibody profiles. That is good they are checking everything. I get my blood
work done every six to eight weeks because of the methotrexate I am taking.I feel like a
lab rat.

Zanaflex is a muscle relaxant. I take flexeril which is also a muscle relaxer. I do not take
it on a daily basis, only when I am flaring. It really helps take the edge off. I do take it at
when I am not planning on driving, it makes me super relaxed.

Are you on Plaquenil for the discoid lupus? I was on that for awhile and took the flexeril with
no problems. I am no longer on plaquenil, my rheumy put me on methotrexate.

There are other meds that can help fibro. I am taking Savella daily and it is helping with the
burning muscle achiness. As you probably know fatigue is a big factor with fibro.

Excercise will give you an energy boost, relieve stress and build muscle. Pace yourself.
Sitting around will make your muscles more stiff and sore. Soak in a hot bath.

I take zanaflex. I like it a lot, but can only take it at night. I thought it was making me have weird dreams, but a trial without it determined that the weird dreams come with or without the zanaflex. It seems to have a relatively short half life, which makes it nice because you can wake up in the morning without feeling hungover, if you took it the night before. It helps me not to tense up in my sleep which causes more than normal pain in the morning.

I love my zanaflex!! though i am happy to hear you have a doc to take you serious, mine tells me he knows it's not in my head then refuses me even ultram! but it's ok tuesday i go to see a pai mngt. doctor, a man i really like i went to collage with him, so i hope. yeah thats about it i hope, but still scared, i hate going to see doctors lol yet i feel sometimes like my life is one long doctors visit.

Hi, Danab, and welcome!  I'm sorry that you have fibro on top of lupus.  Many of the symptoms are similar so perhaps you will "kill two birds with one stone".

Be sure to check out the fibro 101 thread...the first thread on the forum.  There are links to good info about fibro.  There are links about malic acid/magnesium supplements and vitamin D3.  Many with fibro are deficient in these and they have helped me with pain and fatigue.

Hello Danab and welcome. I am sorry you are feeling so bad right now, but I am happy for you, it sounds like you have a wonderful, thorough doctor. I have never tried Zanaflex.

Thanks all, Yes I am on plaqunil, I have only just restarted it after my pcp & another stupid rhuemy took me off it . I still haven't tried the zanaflex. I am really scared of muscle relaxers. I had a real scare with flexeril one time. I supose if the pain gets to be too much I'll work my courage up. Thanks all for responding.
