Pain in the 'sits' bone area, not tailbone

I have severe pain in my 'sits' bone area.  I've had xrays, mri, and cortisone shots.  This pain is very bad when I sit.  I told the doctor I feel like it is muscle-like the spot where the hamstring muscle ends.  The shots helped for a short time and I do yoga and gentle stretching.  I've used pillows to sit on, heat and I am on anti-inflammatory twice a day.  The pain makes long car trips almost impossible.

Yes, I was recently diagnosed even though I feel like I've had it for a long time. I have a new doctor who listened to me when I told him that I hurt all over and get up almost every night to soak in the bathtub in very warm water, sometimes more than once a night. I am pretty active and tolerated the pain for years but it recently became worse, especially in the 'sits' area. I do also have arthritis in my hips and lower spine but I felt this pain was different. My hamstrings hurt also when I sit but feel better when I exercise and then stretch. I use to work with a trainer to learn the correct way to do yoga and stretch. Someone sent me info on this forum today. It was great just to read that I'm not the only one feeling so sore. None of my friends have the aches that I seem to have and I don't remember my mother ever hurting so much, although her sister did have fibro. Thanks for the reply.

Well.. Welcome Puppylover!!  You're in good company here.. most of us love our puppies too, along with kitties and a host of other critters!!!

I have pain in that area too.. my hips and tailbone area are very ouchy most of the time.  I have (as you can see in my signature) some disk herniations.. they're all in my lumbar area.  I also smashed my tailbone to bits around 30 years ago (fell off of a 3 story hay loft and landed on a water spicket (sp?) with my tailbone).  I've always attributed my back and tailbone pain to that.  I just wanted to let you know I CAN RELATE to the pain you are having.

Since you know how to stretch that's more than half of the battle.  If you can stand getting into a hot bath tub that might help.. moist heat works REALLY well.  If you can't do the tub then take warm showers.

I came across your message while searching for something else on the internet. So I just had to signup so I could reply to you.

I also have severe pain in the area of the ischial tuberosity. I have spend 5 years trying to determine what the issue is. I have tried the cortizone shots, warm bath water twice a day ( which did help), phy therapy (it helped as well) . Things seem to bring down the pain a bit, but never did it go away and it always got worse again.

I have had 5 mris, specialits across the crountry..and then..a radioligist told me to have an mri with contract. This type of mri will show if there is any growths in the sciatic notch or any where else around the nerve, inflamation,( same sort of things as a normal mri) however they are also able to tell if there is an increased signal.  My mri results showed a diffused increase and at what location it was coming from. 

To treat the pain i take percoset. 10-12 a day. alot. I am trying neurontin again - just started not sure how it will work.

Have you had an MRI with contract? If so what was the results?

One other thing, i use swedish bitters capsaicin cream. This is over the counter and really helps with the shoting nerve pain.

I hope my story and results help you, at least a little. I know when i was looking for answers, they were hard to come by.

 

I really believe my pain is caused by the fibro.  As long as I stick to a strict exercise and stretching routine the pain is better.  I stretch my hamstrings slowly everyday after warming up.  I also soak in a hot tub of water.  Right now I'm only on Tylenol because I had a bad side effect from Voltaren, but I am going to my doctor next week to discuss finding something else to take--the Tylenol doesn't help completely.  I had a regular MRI which showed arthritis in my hips and lower spine as well as a bulging disc.  I am considering going back to chiropractic care which has helped on the past.

 

I hope this helps Tilemaker.  I did find the article interesting.  I really now have all over pain and I'm sure that the 'sits' bone pain is fibro related.  In fact right now its my shoulders that are really bad.  Fibro is a weird condition!

Hi - was looking for cushion and came across this - I have the symptoms described but not fibromyalgia - mine is result of car accident over 5 years ago. It is awful - can't travel except on train where I can move around.

Does anyone know where I can get a donut pillow that is off center?? so I can relieve the pressure on that side?
