Koffee Klatch on Veterans Day ~ A time to reflect

Veterans are honored around the world today.

Canadians celebrate Remembrance day. Everyone around the country does a moment of silence. They all wear poppy's from November 1st to the 11th to remember.

Australia celebrates poppy day but they call it Anzac day and it is a holiday, no one goes to school and no one goes to work. They use this free time to remember the soldiers that fought in world war 2.

France also remembers their Veterans of war on this day but call it Armistice Day.

And in the USA, where I happen to be from, today is a holiday where government offices, schools and banks are closed. It's 24 hours for us to give thanks to those who have given us our freedom. Below is a quote I think is appropriate today. President Harry Truman said:

OUR DEBT TO THE HEROIC MEN AND VALIANT WOMEN IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY CAN NEVER BE REPAID. THEY HAVE EARNED OUR UNDYING GRATITUDE. AMERICA WILL NEVER FORGET THEIR SACRIFICES.

Is there a Veteran in your life whom you can thank for your freedom? Today is a wonderful time to name those who you have known that served your country. Please use only first names or initials and maybe their relationship to you. This is not meant to be a sad time but a time of thanks and celebration of what we have.

I could try to count how many Vets I know, but that would take ages ...

Well, my brother-in-law Craig is in the Navy. He is serving in Afghanistan right now. He'll have served either 20 or 25 years soon. I think my grandfather is a vet, but I can't remember which war he served in. I am really thankful that Craig is serving, even though I worry about him. I am thankful for all the men and women who have served or are serving. They keep our country safe. So I thank all of them for being brave enough to fight the good fight.

Ahem. ANZAC Day is April 25, and on that day we remember all servicemen and women, but particularly those who died at Gallipoli in WWI.

We also celebrate Nov 11th, and *that* is when we wear poppies.
