Need your help with a new odd problem

My lips have become extremely chapped and blistered. They have been getting worse for about 2 weeks, at first just chapped but getting worse daily. I have taken a part time job at a jewelry studio with hundreds of lights that keep the studio really warm. I already drink tons of water, but I am drinking different water [when I have to drink something other than what I bring from home]. I have a new lipgloss from Sephora; and I have tried a new chapstick that I wonder could be making it worse. I stopped the chapstick yesterday, and today have been using a little olive oil. I can't think of anything else new that could be a culprit. I'm not on any new meds, or perfumes, soaps, new foods, nothing I can think of. Any thoughts? Not only is this painful, but if it doesn't calm down I'm not going to be able to work, my mouth looks like I've been lost at sea for a week. Any ideas on a lip balm, cream, salve, anything that wll help heal? Thanks again for your thoughts.

Heated air is much more drying than fresh air. That is probably the culprit. I use Bert's Bees lip balm and when my lips get really bad I put Vics on them. Also, try not to lick your lips. Berts Bees is really awesome and it even comes in tints to give your lips a little color.

My lips are always dry and I use Blistex several times a day but nothing like what you are talking about. I swear by Aquaphor for everything dry and chapped.

I've never used Burt's Bees products but have heard they are really good.  I've always used chapstick.

But, since this just started happening, I think I'd bring my own water with me to drink and see if that helps.  I'd also bring my own drinking containers.  If you are using cups from there, perhaps it has something to do with what they use to wash the cups.

I'd also try applying petroleum jelly to your lips when at home and before bed so they can heal overnight. If this persists you may want to see the doctor. Blisters are usually cold sores or something viral.

My lips dry out all the time and I have used Avon's Care Deeply lip balm for about 35 years. It's one of the

only products they haven't changed. I wear pants all the time and always have one in my pocket. In the

next campaign they have it on sale for 69 cents with the 2010 calander on it. I usually by about 40 to

get me through the year (kids always need them) so I have plenty on hand.

I had that problem when I drank water at a certain building I worked at about five years ago. No, you're not going crazy. I broke out in lip blisters because I was allergic to their water, which came from old pipes - there was some kind of mineral in the pipe. The blisters were not like cold sores but everything peeled on my lips and around my moouth - all the skin peeled off and reddened heavily in patches. I had to bring all my water from home (I have a well) and couldn't even wash my hands after using their bathroom, but had to use Purell and my own water. Don't use lip gloss or anything irritating to your lips - the lights could be activating something in the gloss to further irritate. I started using Kiehls lip balm and still use it in winter. It is incredible healing, but $10 a tube (though longlasting). I highly recommend it at least for an initial fix.

Did you say that there were a lot of lights at this place that you work?  What kind of lights?  Sometimes when I am under florescent lights too much it makes all of my skin dry, but especially my lips.  I swear by this lip balm at Victoria's Secret.  Its $5 for a tin and it lasts forever (each tin will seriously last me about a year).  I have them stashed everywhere!  And they take care of the problem.  I hope that you find a solution fast that works for you!!!  Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I did begin with vaseline a couple of days ago and I think its a bit better. I worked today and I really feel that the lights in combo with one of the lipsticks or gloss was burning my lips. The blisters are a bit smaller but the chap is still bad. I appreciate the advice and understanding. After being so sick in August-September and now this, and seeing people where I work leave the small convenience store in droves with throat lozenges, tylenol, cold medicine and hand sanitizer, I am afraid to leave the house. God give me strength and keep me strong and healthy.

Just read your post and I suffer from chapped lips all the time. My friend told me it is from mouth breathing at night which greatly dries the mucosa of mouth and even lips. She told me a great product. It is a little pricey but my lips are like butter. PUCKER UP LOL. It is a lip emollient by Jo Malone. She is out of England and her products are bar none the finest. Her candles are unreal and I cannot stand many smells. Hers, such as basil, are remarkable. got off track but hope this helps.

Some of the meds, notably benadryl and ultram, cause dryness of mouth, eyes, etc. I have taken these and have chronically chapped lips too. My rheumatologist insisted I stop the benadryl.

I find using plain, ordinary chap stick several times a day woeks best. I also use GenTeal eyedrops, which have no presevatives.

This summer ended up with very bad chapped lips and tried all kinds of things like you did.  Caused it to become worse Doc even put me on antibiotics because it caused a skin infection. That did not help so sent me to A Dermatologist.  She took a look and said it was like dermatitis on my lips.  Gave me a scrip for an ointment one step above hydrcortisone and told me to use only vaseline on my lips.  Cleared up in two days.  Now do use lip gloss or lip stick on most days but always before bed use a glob of vaseline (she said do not be stingy) and use the ointment at any hint of chapped lips. 

The fibro and the meds make my skin dry and fibro really makes it easier for infections to form.

Oh do not use anything that will sting if you have chapped lips only makes it worse Doc said like those perfumed or scented lip glosses,

Oh, let me tell ya about dry air. My nose is starting to bleed. So i used the cool air humidifier. It really helps against the furnace. I hope everyone is feeling better soon.. we have enough to deal with, right? :) Laura smilewinkgrin
