Vacuum cleaner for dog lovers?

I know we have discussed vacs that are light weight, easy to use , etc. but I need a vac that really picks up the dog fur.  My vac is self propelled so I can use it without too much trouble but with a golden retriever there really is a lot of fur on the rug.  I do brush her with a Furminator( a grooming tool)  which removes a lot of the shedding fur.  I would like a vac that picks up more fur and maybe one I could use for the inside of my van (which is covered with fur right now).  My son thinks a Dyson is what I should get.  Vacs are so expensive and I don't want to spend a lot of money if it won't pick up fur.

I have three dogs, two don't shed much, a yorkie and bischon, but the lab does, and I have 6 cats! I know crazy pet lady! but I have a dyson and i LOVE it. They are quite expensive, but I have had mine now for about five years and still love it. I had tried all kinds of things to get the pet hair up and the dyson works the best. On my furnature I just use a softer pet hair brush and it pick up all the hair so easy. I also have a furminator brush for the dog and love it. The other thing that works great is one of those fur removers from scotch or johnson and johnson? but they can be expensive because once they fill up with fur you're supposed to throw them away and get another, but my son fixed up a contraption, he cut the plastic collection bin and duct taped a small baggie onto it and still works fine. Thank goodness for duct tape! lol! By the way, I wanted a golden retriver when I got my lab, but everyone told me to much fur! I love my lab Hope so much, but I still want a retriever someday!

I have a bissel too and it works really good. My dil has a Dyson, but the bissel works just about as well and is tons cheaper. But you do have to empty the canister a lot. But it really does get the hair up. I would check it out before you spend hundreds on the other one. Not saying that the Dyson isn't better, it probably is. But much more expensive. I had a huge german shepherd that shed like crazy. We had to put her down about a month ago. We are still finding her hair that excaped into corners and under things. But when I find it, I feel like a part of her is still with me. I am getting a puppy in March and am so excited about it. I am still bummed over the one that I lost. I had her for nine years and she was part of the family. I hope that you find a good vac. I am happy with mine, I think it was around 100.00. The Dyson's can run many more than that, but they look really sturdy.

Any way, I hope that this helps a little. Oh and my puppy will be another shepherd. I need that in my life so badly. I really miss Dharma.

We have a Dyson too ... and LOVE IT. It is really heavy for me ... but WOW it gets the dog fur! (And everything else. ewww) I agree with Skeye .. it's pretty amazing to see the canister fill up! :)

I was actually kind of horrified to realize how much icky stuff was in our carpet when I started using it! In fact, we ended up getting hardwork flooring put in the living room BECAUSE of my Dyson ... I just was amazed by the fur and dirt and yuck that had apparently been ground into my carpet for so long.

Now that we have hardwood, we chase dust bunnies around all the time .. they don't 'velcroe' to the wood like they did to the carpet. But I STILL love my Dyson. And I got it at Big Lots for $175!! (It was a company refurb ... with a warranty. A new one was a lot more than that ... I know because I bought a new one at Lowes, then popped into Big Lots for a few things and nearly dropped over when I saw the exact same vacuum for about half of what I had just paid! I took the first on back!)

The salesman at Lowes had told me that a great thing about Dysons is that they pretty much never wear out and don't need replacement parts. That's been true for 3 years ... and counting. You wash out the HEPA filters, there are no bags, and it's TOUGH! (I have 3 kids, 3 dogs, 2 cats, and a husband ... it gets used a lot. lol)

they use a battery that you can recharge... you would be surprissed at how much dog hair they pick up... very light and no cords. the botom comes off to dump contents. they run about $30.00 .. I think at like target Wallmart . and bed or bath .

I have a bichon and shih tzu. My little shih tzu is shedding her baby hair, the only time they shed, and I'm not use to having fur all over everything. I have a Hoover, I swear by Hoover products, and it does a great job. I have a problem getting it off dark colored clothes and I use dryer sheets but like my black jeans still come out of the dryer with dog hair on them. She is almost 10 mos. old and the groomer said she will shed til she is about a year old.
