He thinks I have Lupus.

I am freaking right out.

My Dr. said he didn't think I had it, but ran a test for it anyway along with a panel for a bunch of other autoimmune disorders. I thought my RF factor would come back high, maybe arthritis or something, but that was fine. It was the Lupus test (ANA) that was high. I'm glad he ran that test just to be sure.

Gawd, now I have to learn all about that.

I should be sleeping right now, I have to work 3rd shift tonight. I can't sleep, though......

I was tested for Lupus also and mine was high.  I was tested twice after and was normal.  Sometimes it can be a false positive.......

Libby is absolutely correct.  My friend's daughter was diagnosed with Lupus and had the high ANA results.  She, too, freaked out but then she was tested again and is fine.  She has been fine for over 12 years, too.  So, don't get upset.  That won't help anything.

Melissa, A high ANA does not always indicate lupus or other autoimmune disease. Your
doctor will have to run other antibody tests to confirm what you may have. Each disease
has specific antibodies. It may take sometime to get a diagnosis. I know it is scary.

Melissa, I understand your concern and know what you might be feeling. I have an
autoimmune disease MCTD(lupus, scleroderma,RA). It takes sometime to fully accept it.
You do learn to live with it by taking one day at a time. I was frightened when I was
diagnosed. There are drugs, immunosuppressants that can help.

I hope your able to calm down after reading the post that it can be a false positive and sleep.

 

I did not know that either and a friend of my son's was just dxd with lupus and fibro. I think I will have him talk to her about it.

Hi...I can only reiterate what the others have said.  I have posted this before, but my son tests blood and he says ANA's are the most unreliable tests that he runs and patients come back two or three times to have it retested.  All you need is an infected  scratch or some other low grade infection that you may not even notice to have an abnormal reading.  Before settling on Lupus, I would have it retested, but that's just my opinion.

Hi,

Just wanted to say I am thinking about you and know how scary all this stuff can be. I'm with everyone, don't borrow trouble yet. WE seem to have many false positives, interesting. I tested positive twice for RA and never developed and now test negative. Go figure.

Hi... My good friend had a positive ANA and freaked out. She went to my Rheumatologist and he said that she did not have lupus. Lots of people get a false positive on this particular test. If you haven't seen a rheumatologist, it might be a good idea. Take care and try not to worry!

Ok, I've calmed down & did get some sleep. I didn't know ANA's were so unreliable.

Hi Lissa,

Consider the ANA a screening test and by itself doesn't mean anything is wrong it just means there might be. If its high then they usually run other blood tests to determine the cause and sometimes they don't find anything else. I remember first going and getting this test done many years ago and my pcp rushed my rheumy appointment because of how high it was. Nothing else was found tho and I've been tested many times since and it doesnt go down much. Hang in there.
