I was wondering if any of you have heard of chelation therapy for FM?  My daughter was diagnosed w/ FM  but later we found out she has heavy metal poisoning & that is causing the symptioms of FM.  We're hoping after the treatments she will be free from all this.  It will take at least 20 treatments, perhaps more.  Tomorow is her first IV.  She is now 15-had a birthday 2 weeks ago.  We pray that the metals didn't do any further damage to her body.  Her body is a pool of metals & the doc said what the urine showed is just a sample, her muscles have absorbed lots of it-thus the FM symptoms.   And we're praying that the side affects from the IV's will be minimal.  When she had the heavy metal test she was very faint & sick till the next day.  They are going to decrease the amount of medicine in the IV's at first. I'll post how she does.

Did they say what caused the heavy metal poisoning?

well we live in a old mining town & we lived in a 100 year old building until she was 11. In this area lead tests are done regularly on children who are in the state run preschool, which she didn't attend. Unfortunately no one has ever had her tested & she went to 11 doctors in our town since Nov 2008, and the doc who thought of testing her was not in this town! Go figure. We don't know how she got it, it's not only lead but tin, cadmium, arsenic etc. And the place we lived until she was 11 was the very home my husband grew up in his whole life. Plus we raised our son in the same home until he was 15. The doctors say that some peoples immune systems can sort of fight off metals. My daughter has always had a compromised immune system. It will be interesting to see how she is after the chelation therapy. Thanks for your thoughts!

Just curious, what kind of doctor discovered the heavy metal poisoning and how did they test for it?

Did you get a second opinion?

So sorry your daughter has to go through this, Lettuce.  Dagger...after exposure to a large amount of flea powder (a friend sprinkled it all over the rugs and bed in a room that I spent the in then never vaccumed it up) I was tested for the ingredients in the powder and heavy metals in a blood test.  Not too much later I developed fibro symptoms and have had them ever since.  Coinsidence?  I will never know!

She went to 12 doctors in the past year, hundreds of different tests (never for metals), all negative results. The most recent doc is a natureopathic doc who did an IV test for metals. A certain medicine is put into the IV then all urine she passed for the next 6 hours is collected & sent in. Also stools were sent in from several different days & plus saliva samples. The results showed she's is high in lead, cadmium, tin in addition to quite a few others. No I didn't get a 2nd opinion,this is the only thing she came back positive on since she started having symptoms at age 8. Before this past year she has been to doctors through out the years, no one ever tested for lead, most doctors would say something like, "if she'd just go to school she'd get her mind off herself" In just the past 13 months, she quit dancing, piano & most activities she loved. These are the things the doctors said, she should have her gallbladder removed, depression, "typical teenage behavior", more depression, FM, all in her head, and now heavy metal poisoning. And the symptoms for this are exactly what she has had for years. I hope & pray the chelation therapy works.
I took her in Friday for the 1st IV, they couldn't get a vein. She has low cholesterol & her body doesn't absorb her food. We'll try another IV in the morning, if they can't find one in her arm they will look to her leg.

I'll be praying that this will be your answer.  She has gone through so much.  I see that you lived in an old building.  I know they used to use paint with lead in it and kids put everything in their mouths...including chewing on window sills.  I sure do hope they get to the bottom of this.

You said she doesn't absorb her food. In addition to heavy metal, could she have gluten intolerance or something like that. Some others on here have that and I thought they said they don't absorb food properly. Someone who knows, please help he out! :) Has she been tested for anything like that?

I hope that after the treatment she gets better.

I didn't see where you said her body didn't absorb food.  I have Crohn's disease and I have problems absorbing foods.  With Crohn's, the small intestine becomes inflamed and it doesn't absorb foods like it should.  Here is a link from the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America.  This will explain it to you better.

Yes she's been tested for celiac disease & she had an upper GI w small bowel & everything looked ok. The lack of absorption is a result of the metals. Her 1st IV went very well, found the vein right away. They put 1/2 dose of the meds in this time & she didn't get sick. Thank the Lord. She will have the next one this coming Monday. I know the metals are causing problems but I still believe her immune system isn't "normal". She got an ear inf at 1 month of age. Right now she has an ear infection. We will see how she is after the IV's. Thanks for all the prayers & concern!

Just an update on my 15 year old daughter. She has had 3 IV's of the chelation therapy. The 1st was 1/2 dose & she did great. The 2nd dose they increased to 3/4 & she was sick that day. This time they did a full dose & it's been 48 hours & she is having headaches, stomache aches & weakness in her entire body. So next time she will have to go back to 1/2 dose probably. Poor kid, she can't get off the couch she feels so lousy.
