Can surgery bring on a return of fibromyalgia?

Hi,

Five years ago I had surgery for hyperparthyroidism. After that I had a great improvement in my fibro. symptoms. I was beginning to believe that I didn't have fibro. at all just the hidden hyperparthyrodism. Well the day after New Years I had really bad pain just below my right breast. Due to severe constipation I though that maybe something was really wrong with my intestines. Went to the ER and was admitted .
Was diagnosed with the strep pnuemonia that had gone into my bloodsteam. I had surgery for a sack that was filled with bacteria on my right lung. Well needless to say I was in the hospital for 17 days. I was pretty lucky,a lot of people that get this don't fare as well as I did.
Now all of the old symptoms that I had years ago are back. Flu like symptoms ,achy legs and hips , skin sensitivity. Gerd symptoms are worse.
appetite getting better but was really bad for quite sometime. Has anyone had this type of thing happen to them after major surgery. I just had more testing done because of feeling so crummy but all the results are fine. I'm feeling pretty scared and alone and hope that others may have gone through something similar.

Stress, both mental and physical, can cause fibro to flare. You've just had a terrible ordeal. Your body has been through a lot and needs to heal.

In a word, YUP! Be gentle but consistent with yourself, gently upping your mobility and getting some time in the sunshine. This will help your Vitamin D and serotonin levels. Cutting back on the refined carbs might help with the gird. Take care and heal. Glad you pulled through and fought off a nasty bug.

Any kind of trauma to the body can put fibro at the front. While your body is fighting off infections, your body is in overdrive, and for someone with fibro, this can cause the pain to flare. You being as sick as you were was such a huge trauma to your body that the fibro came out of hibernation, so to speak. I hope you start feeling better. Good luck to you.

Hi Patchie, Glad you made it through that nasty bout of pneumonia. Flares can sometimes
come from nowhere. Many times they can be attributed to stress, overdoing, weather
changes and illnesses but sometimes they just happen. That is the nature of fibro.

When a flare hits take it easier, but still get some form of exercise. Do what you can to
keep the stress down. I have been doing relaxation therapy for almost a year. I can't
say I'm flare free but I can say it helps with my pain level. I do a combination of deep
breathing exercises and meditation. When I'm hurting I try to do something to distract
myself like reading, watching a movie or calling a friend.

Hi Patche and welcome. We do have good times and bad times. I have never been pain free since the first flare. I did have a good period Sept-Dec where I felt the best I have for a long time but wasn't pain free by no means, actually, had a lot of pain from doing so much but I had more energy and didn't feel sick all the time like you have the flu like I normally do. Sadly, in Jan I had a very close cousin that passed away and it all came back and hasn't left yet.

 

I lost a grandson, it will be 35 mos ago tomorrow, and that put me in a downward spiral that I have not recovered from and haven't felt like I did prior to his death since. There is some trauma in our lives we can recover from and some we will never recover fully from.

 

You had a very serious illness and it might take your body time to recover from it.

Hi, Patche, and welcome!  I'm so glad you found us and joined in!  You already have the answer to your question.  There have been several on this forum that started the symptoms after surgery.  For others, it has been a automobile accident, illness, or just a horrible time in their lives.  Yes, stress does play a big part in all of this.  So, try to relax and hopefully, as your body heals, the symptoms will settle down. 

 

Meanwhile, we are here to help you.  Don't hesitate to ask questions because we usually have someone that can answer it for you.  Be sure to check out Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum.  There are links to good information about fibro there and you will learn a lot, too.

Hi,

I'd like to thank all of you for making me feel that there is "a light at the end of the tunnel". I was really feeling pretty good for several years so this coming back again was a real bummer. I'm just glad that I found this board because you all can share when things are going great and when they aren't so great.
